Paint for MDF

Hey, going to build a triple amplifier rack out of 1/2" MDF.

Is there a paint recommended for use with MDF, I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I didn't find much with the search.

I would like it to be as chip/flake resistant as possible, would spray or roll on be best?

Not an expert on it but sanding it with 120-150 grit then use a solvent-based primer must be solvent based cant be water based otherwise it will cause the board to swell up, then paint should be the best way to do it .

Dont know what you are looking for in terms of final color etc. but I have seen a couple people on here use Herculiner. That stuff seems pretty chip/flake resitant. Like I said I dont know if you are going for a flashy color or you are just trying to coat the MDF in something.

Use a good sealer/bonder primer then paint.

I would roll it on to get the best finish, then spray clear coat to protect the finish if you want.

Deft sanding sealer first, then paint.

The use of a good sealer cannot be overstated, I neglected to do this when spraying the MDF exposed inside my port walls with Krylon and wound up with a pretty patchy paint job.

You're kidding right? Water base will NOT cause the board to swell. Do you realize the volume of water weight it would take to make any difference in the wood?
