Ascendant Audio Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra

Recommended Posts

So I've got this build log going on. You can check it out HERE. It involves, dare I say, some old school Ascendant Audio Atlas subs. Taking it a step farther, I installed them IB style. :o Lastly, this is a, get as much bass as I can with 500 watts without losing any trunk space because I'm a sensible family man with financial limits, build. If you're interested check it out and let me know what you think. Here is a couple of teasers.

Thanks Lithium.

It's nice to have the deep reaching bass without the box. The low power requirement is the icing on the cake. None of this big alternator , second battery, runs of 0 gauge wire, yada, yada, yada. Don't get me wrong, I myself have built the multi-kilowatt multiple 50 lbs sub system and loved it. It's the simplicity of this setup that I'm loving. So much for so little, what bliss.

So if I add a little more? Will I get more bliss, or should I say bass? I'm eyeing theFi IB3. Almost double the x-max and almost triple the power handling but 3dB down on sensitivity. To be further investigated. Any thoughts?

I don't know the parameters of the Atlas sub, but the Fi ib3 has a lot f/s and high Q so it would probably have better frequency response and probably better low end extension!

Nice IB by the way. I can't wait to have a home someday. IB will be in my HT.

AE makes great stuff, but The ib15s are more for home use if i remember correctly.

Nice work, are those the ZED built US Acoustics? Can't tell from the picture.

These are the USB models. I'm not sure if Zed built the USB models or not. I've never opened them up to look at the board. For the youngsters wondering, no, these do not plug into computers. USB is part of the model number. :P

i've read great stuff about these.

i myself may try an ib3 18 later on so i dont have to change out my baffle.

I've seen these out there. The price is right. The specs are about par with my current Atlas. The AE15IB would make and excellent replacement if I ever burn the Atlas. I'm looking to make a step up.

I have heard that AE offers a car version of the AE15IB. I think the VAS and the Qts are lower. That along with a 18 cubic foot trunk would give you and overall system Q closer to .7. I'm not the authority on any of this mumbo jumbo, but some say that a overall system Q of .7 make for a pretty good sounding system. I'm just not too sure on the AE sub because, they are still 100 watt subs with an X-max of 18mm and a sensitivity of 86dB. Which is what I currently have.

On the other hand. The IB3 is a 500watt at 20Hz, 30mm x-max sub with a similar 86dB sensitivity. In theory if I get a pair of these and a 1000 watt amp how close to scratching 140dB will I get ?

They did the USA, then later USB.

not sure on your math but i wonder if your trunk would have enough air space for the 2 15s. do you plan additional venting in the trunk?

I'm not too sure on the math, I'm still figuring all this out as I go. I know for sure my trunk isn't the recommended 10 times Vas. I don't know about venting the trunk, I don't think I have ever heard of that done.

Its definitely been done. You won't need 10x if its leaky...although if you are after loud you'll have big gains with an enclosure, but I realize that you want your space.

Thanks to everyone for you appreciation of this build. I know that it gets tough to here how people want to have their cake and eat it too regarding big output in small systems. Here I am wanting as big as I can get sounds without a box. Thanks for your gentle use of the flame throwers.

I did clean the build up a bit. Here are some teaser pics.

You should do it. At first I was kinda meh about doing it. I glad it did it. It helps out big time in the wow factor. I pop the trunk and people like the cleanliness. All the wires and crap confuse those who don't know what they are looking at. Plus no one likes wires all over the place in any car. I explain about the no box situation. Then I let them hear for themselves. The rest is history. There's nothing like taking pride in what you do. :)
