Powering a Fi Q 12"

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about getting a 12" Fi Q for my ride, but can only afford 500 rms to the sub. Will 500 rms from a JL Audio 500/1v2 be enough to make the Q sound great? Volume isn't a problem cause I've run subs at 400 rms and was satisfied.

yeah that would be absolutely fine for the Q, just make sure to set the gain accordingly and not go overboard on it and it should sound great

First of all, what are your listening preferences? The Q is really designed for SQ, not getting loud. If you're worried about how loud it will get off of 500wrms then you may want to consider an SSD or BL. Otherwise, 500wrms will be plenty to get the driver moving and sounding good.

I'm an sq guy. Right now I have a 10" RF P3 running at 400rms in a ported box and it sounds like plenty. (Temporary cause I had my last sub stolen) Just looking for better sq. I would put the Q in a sealed box. I am very familiar with setting gains, so no problem.

Yeah that Q will do the job on 500 watts in a sealed enclosure, since there is no problem underpowering a sub you will be fine. (I had subs rms sum up to 2250 watts and only threw 700-800 watts to them and loved it, so did my electrical).

+1 for being nice to your electrical lol

just because a sub has a RMS rating, doesnt mean it needs all that to make sound. you will be happy with that combo :)

Ok yes, I we know that the Q is a SQ sub, but in every other post i see ppl saying if you want output go with such and such or go with the next. I have a 15" Q in a 4.0 cb.ft bin at 30 Hz and it gives ppl headachs when they sit in my ride no bullshit. The Q is a SQ sub, but their beastly in the right application. But am a SPL hog, and always wanting more.trink40.giftrink40.giftrink40.gif

Yes the Q can give some real output, but it's not designed for it. I have a pair of 12" Q's myself, have yet to discover exactly what they can do as I've not been able to finish the enclosure and now the new amp rack, but I didn't buy them to produce big output. I believe the main reason that everyone says that is because a sub that's more spl oriented will (in most cases) give more output per watt than the Q when comparing apples to apples. That's given optimal enclosures, same amp, same vehicle, yadda yadda yadda, you know the drill.

It's just always best practice to purchase the equipment for the intended application. I have NO doubt what so ever that 15" Q treats you right and gives solid amounts of output, I'm hoping for similar treatment from my 12's to impress others but it's not the goal of the system.
