Help with which amp to use for 18"btl

Recommended Posts

Hello and glad to be a member on this site been reading all the topics and answers you all have and very helpfull. Well my problem is that i have never used a FI BTL before and not that i am new to the stereo wrold i have had my fair share of systems but my question is i just ordered 2 fully loaded dual 2ohm 18" FI BTL's and the amp i was going to use was a MTX 92001 mono amp..Which is rated at 3000rms @ 1ohm when i spoke with MTX techs they said that it would do closer to 4000rms @ 1ohm..But this monster draws ALOT of power and was wondering if i went down to 2 2000rms mono blocks would be a lil better....I have a 99 yukon my box is being built to 5.5 ea side being tuned @ 32hrtz i also have a 270 ho alt 3 yellow top optimas just want a lil help with the amps if anyone can give me a lil push in the right direction ..thanks david

Well with dual 2 ohm subs you won't be optimizing that amp. After wiring the coils in series and the subs in parallel you'll have a final load of 2 ohms on any amp you choose. If that amp does 3000 watts at 1 ohm, it will only give about 1500 at 2 ohms.

So either find an amp that does ~4000 watts at 2 ohms or get two 1 ohm, 2000 watt amps and daisy chain them.

well if you have a dual 2ohm sub wiring it dont you get 1ohm ea sub so i can get 2 2000 rms amps @ 1ohm running 1 amp per sub.....

yes. thats what he said in the last part of his reply. He was saying the MTX amp is not good because it would be running at 2ohm instead of 1ohm so you wont be getting the power you really could get from the amp. You either have to get a 2ohm stable amp or 2 1ohm stable amps. You would need to change your subs to dual 1ohm in oreder to get all the power out of that MTX that they are telling you it will do.

yea i did order the dual 1 ohm subs but i figured since this amp draws so much that i would be better off on my truck to get 2 2000rms amps and go 1 on 1 and still pound just as hard....so i contacted scott and ask him to change my order to dual 2 ohm instead but i was just making sure of what amps would be good on these subs since i have never had them before..i was thinking maybe 2 hifonics brutus amps or rockford t20001bd amps or can you guys help me with amps that might do just as good thanks alot for all the help.....

AQ2200, SAZ-2000D, MD-3D, AX2000, AX3200DE, ZX2500.1

There is a mix of amps rated a 2000wrms or a little higher.

USA Amps are always beasts, you wont be disappointed. If you want to stay mainstream Alpine are a 2Kwrms amp as well.

Um, you realize that whether you have 4000 watts with one amplifier or 4000 watts combined with two 2,000 amplifiers that they will draw relatively the same current?

i would go with sundown audio 2000d's.....the zx2500.1 is nice too....and ku40 is right, dependent upon efficiency, you're going to be drawing around the same amount of current whether with 2 2kw amps or a single 4kw amp....what you have battery/alt wise sounds good, but how much wiring do you have? a single run of 1/0 or more than that? when you start playing with this amount of power, doubling and tripling up runs of 1/0 can make quite a difference, altho its not cheap. but as far as bang for your buck amps, sundown audio is awesome, good looking stuff, good support and reliability and power that is just sweet. by the way, ku40, what you been upto man? (imsolost7886) off of soundillusions.net havent been around in forever, but this time im back and im going big.

*edit* kill the kicker zx 2500.1 it is stable to 2 ohms only....at least that i can find....also, i've owned a t20001bd and i wasnt really impressed with the output to cost ratio....it was way under power for the avg benches.
