New, got some Questions.

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm new to this and been going by what my friend and his dad tell me but as their taste in music is different than mine I wanted to ask around. I drive a 03 s-10 xtrme ext cab and have 2 12's currently but they are horrid and was looking for something better. I list to alot of rock, metal but i also listen to quite a bit of hiphop/rap. I have a hifonics 2000watt amp and was wondering what size/series of speaker would work good for my taste in music and size of the truck that also work with the amp I already have.

Welcome

Do you have a budget in mind?

The ssd line or the bl line might be what you are looking for, but that also depends on what you are willing to spend.

Budget isn't really an issue right now. What size am I looking at here? 12 or 15,s? Heard the bigger the speaker the worse it is more rock type music.

That's a common myth. An 18 can sound just as tight and punchy as an 8, and an 8 can get loud and low like an 18. It's all in the installation and execution of the design of the system. 12's can get PLENTY loud, but in general 15's will get louder. As long as the enclosure is built and tuned correctly the subs will sound great no matter the size. Besides, moving into anything in the Fi line will most likely sound better than what you have now.

That's a very unfortunate myth in car audio. A quality speaker will play at the same 'speed.' If there is a difference, it's immeasurable or negligible. Say you have 500w on a 12, then a 15, and 18, assuming the box is build to spec, the more cone area you have the louder. So it's really on how much space you want to give up, and what you can fit.

What kind of 12's do you have? It could be that the box is not optimal for them and that's why they sound so bad.

What size box are your 12s in now? or you willing to build a new one for the sub or subs

Well its a 3 seat s10 and the third seat in the back folds int othe side and the 2 12's are in a box that fits from one side to the other, I didnt make it so I do not know the dimensions. As for what 12's they are, street edge 100watts. I wouldn't have a problem with assembling a new box to fit the new speaker if that is required as long as it will fit behind the seats, which shouldnt be a problem. Thanks for clearing up the "myth."

Are you looking for sound quality or loud ? If you want a lil more sound quality i would go with a 15in bl but if you want to blow your head off go with a 15 in btl or 18s in either line depends on space you want to give up. You have room for either of the choices i list and one will be more than enough. Do you have the hifonics 2610D? or a something like that It will supply plenty of power to the subs i listed Btl 15in you want about 4 cubes after displacement tuned to like 40 to 45 htz that should enable you to listen to all the music you just listed pretty well and still hit some lows on those rap songs

Good Luck with install keep us posted

Thanks for the input, I would like a little more quality over loudness, the trucks cabin is rather small so I think either one will be loud and I have a Hifonics Brutus BXI2010D, would this be alright?

Hi,

You're coming from far.

Get the dimensions of the box you want to fit in your car. From that point it will be easier to help you.

Whatever sub(s) you will get from FI will be a good upgrade for your system!

40 45 hz tuning ? It's pretty high for music.

Why in the world would you tune a BTL that high? Fi recommends 32hz as optimal, 30-35 is the best range, 40-45 is just way to high.

A couple of Dual 1 BL's would be right up your alley IMO. SSD's would be great as well, but you could upgrade to a bigger amp down the road with the BL's over the SSD's. Now, whether or not you should go with 12's or 15's would depend on the room you're willing to use up. You'll need around 5-6+ cuft gross for a pair of twelves, 8-9+ cuft gross for a pair of 15's depending on tuning and port type.

45 inches from driver side to passenger side, 20 inches from back of truck to back of seats (comfortably) and about 25 inches from the floor to bottom of my rear windshield.

Thats 13cuft total, plenty of room for a pair of 15's ported. I think 2 15" Dual 1 BL's in 7cuft (net) tuned to ~32hz would be fantastic for you. That will load that amp to 1 ohm, and give you some good power from it. Eventually you might want to consider upgrading the amp to a Sundown 3k, the new 2.5k when it comes out or something along those lines (a new Crescendo Audio 3KWP even). You'll have all the output you could want (I'd imagine) along with great sound.

2 ssd (or 2 bl for future upgrades) should sound good.

Leave some room in the trunk : 2 12"s would fit nice.

I didnt see under tech section where it explained dual 1 and dual 2. If I was to only get 1 sub at first would it still need to be dual 1?

If you know for sure you will be getting a second one then yeah, get it with Dual 1 coils and wire it at 2 Ohm til you get the second one.
