So my box cut out is alittle too big

Recommended Posts

Its a down fire box and the speaker cut out is like 1/4" too big. Its 11 1/4 and the subs I have right now wont screw in because they screw holes arent furhter out than 11 1/4 for some odd reason.

This is a box for 2 12s

Its a downfire box so if I were to put a plate on there and do a new cut out Id lose some clearance.

Any other suggestions?

You will lose some clearance, but you could just add another baffle. That's the only way i can think of, does it go under your seat? You can make the feet slightly taller to make some more clearance.

thrash the box and build a new one , measure the hole in the baffle and/or see if the woofer fits well ....before you glue it to the rest of the box ! once you've done that you'll never make that same mistake again !

don't take half measures it will only make things worse !

thats the best advice i can give you.

take any screws out of the top baffel, run the box on a table saw or use a circular saw to take the baffle off. then glue on a new baffle..

oh and dont cut your hand off..

This is about the best way to do it, follow along the edge of the baffle all the way around with a saw. Table would be most accurate, a circular saw would do IF you take your time. Also if you do this be sure to put the kerf of the saw on the baffle board NOT the rest of the box, otherwise you'll loose the amount of kerf of the blad from the total height of the enclosure. If you need a clearer idea of what I'm saying let me know, I'll draw a simple diagram.

Oh damn I am not that skilled at doing something with wood. Im more of a mechanical guy. For some reason I always sucked in wood shop lol

I am not scrapping this box, Id rather buy subs with a wider mounting ring than scrap the box I just paid for.

My subs are old anyways and I have been looking for an upgrade.

When looking at sub specs and it says "cut out diameter" is that how much space the sub ring has? Or what measurement am I looking for so Ill know itll be large enough to be screwed in.

Again its only 11 1/4"

Where r u located, I've done lots of box mods like that, be glad to help you out if you were close.

Also, what kind of depth do you have to work with? I believe most cast frame woofers have a 11.25" cutout diameter which opens the door to lots of drivers from lots of manufacturers.

With leaving 1/2" pole vent clearance I can run a 7" deep sub

Im in central california

just get a piece of MDF to cover the hole, seal it, screw it and make sure the whole is the right size now.

thorhammer...he has 2 custom made 10" dc level 5s...and the magnet is bigger than the cutout so he had to have adapter plates made for his speakers so he could mount them.
