Another vs question lol

Recommended Posts

Im asking this for a friend of mine. A local guy has a 12" Fi Q subwoofer for sale. basically brand new $200.. Im trying to talk a friend of mine into it. He has heard a JLW7 and he was impressed.. how does this sub rate compaired to a w7.. i know as far as price the Q is a hell of a lot cheaper. Just would like some info I can give to my friend in terms of if he should buy this subwoofer. I know there is a ton of different factors and I know you guys are gonna bring alot of those up which is perfectly fine. The vehicle is a 2004? Grand Prix, so its going in a truck, his current set up is one of my old setup's which is 2 Kicker cvr 12's in a ported box I had made for them.. sounds low.. just not what he wants. i dont blame him i didnt want it either lol. current amp is a soundstream 500 2 ch. older rubicon. nothing special, we kinda pieced it together. If he gets this sub he will be purchasing a new amp to fully power this sub. At all stock electrical and monster cable 4gauge wire's will he have a problem throwing 1000 watts to this Q? Just lookin for some opinions. Box will be built ported and to spec of course.

when he described what he wanted to me.. he said it like this.. "i want something that will hit hard and travel also".. so thats what were goin for.. I have no doubt he will be more happy with 1 12" Q over 2 12" kicker cvr's LOL.. just want to be able to give him some facts to ease his mind in this before sending him out in the expensive world of car audio :)

1000 watts will probably b fine on stock electrical. the q and the w7 are probably fairly close in all aspects.

ok, sounds good. is $200 a fair used price, i went to fi's website to see brand new price and it appears they are making changes for 2010 and its not selling them currently, so i couldnt check the price. Ive heard the Q has some nice bass to it. friend of mine isnt a pro by any means. he's not gonna go all out with the rest of his system. Just wants something that sounds good and he can fit in his trunk, thinkin this is the best choice for him. keep the opinions commin, me and him are gonna go take a look at the sub right now. in the picture that sub for a 12" looks real healthy.

The Q and W7 aren't similar at all. Curious to know what he was impressed about the W7 with. It would help us understand what will work for him better.

Also need to know how big of a box he is willing to have, what size amp (or budget).

Oh and don't write off the Kickers, although dual CVR's isn't what I'd probably choose from them.

Yea kickers are ok I guess, just not for me. We bought the q last night. Thing is healthy for sure. Probably going to power it with a mb quart discuss 1000 or a hifonics about the same wattage. He doesn't want to upgrade his electrical. Even though I think he is gonna need a 2nd smaller battery in the back. Thinking were gonna put it in a 3 cu ft box tuned to about 35hz and see what it can do. As far as what he liked about the w7 is how it hit real hard... Not all of us know everything about what were hearing as far as all the different frequencies. Just know what we like. Sorry I just can't be more detailed. But speaker is In hand thanks guys

Maybe a smaller box is a better idea.

If hitting is what he wants there are other more appropriate woofers, but the Q is still impressive

there may have been a more appropriate woofer.. but he got the guy down to 150 for a 12" Q in what appears to be perfect condition. cant pass that up, dont think he will be upset with his purchase.

You better measure the coils and have that thing played for you to make sure it is in good condition then just looking at it. A sub can have a lot of damage to it that the untrained eye wont see.

we put the meter on each coil. 1.5-1.6 each... plugged it in free air and heard no scraping or rubbing sounds at all. Any other tests we can try?.. if there is something wrong i would like to get it back to the guy we got it from. plans are for it to just sit around till an amp is purchased and a box is built.
