E8 v.2 Prototype

Recommended Posts

So... SA-8 a little too big / powerful / deep for you ?

I'm working on the E8 v.2 model as well for those of you who fit that description. THERE IS NO ETA OR PRICE YET - MY PROTOTYPE JUST GOT HERE TODAY!

Works a bit better sealed as well -- very close to the E8 v.1 in sealed performance.

Sticking to the 200 RMS rating of the E8 v.1 but this model is alot more robust -- I did alot of thinking over the last year or so about how to make an affordable 8" driver that can take more abuse than the E8 v.1 could... and this is what I came up with.

It will be cheaper than the SA-8 but, obviously, more expensive than the E8 v.1 model.

Magnet is 6mm narrower than the SA-8 and only a single stack... I cranked it up pretty high on our test bench 1500 @ 1 ohm and I was pleased. It doesn't have the advanced coil cooling of the SA-8 but doesn't need it as it's a 200 RMS rated driver.

On to the pictures and specs :

CIMG3407.JPG

* Yes the top plate is slightly taller than the SA-8 -- stamped frame to reduce costs (it has a glossy black finish).

CIMG3408.JPG

* Rubber surround - the surround is the limiting factor excursion wise in this driver so I used rubber to prevent tearing. The E8 v.1 foam surround allowed more travel than the driver could safely handle - so I put a "brake" on this driver so to speak.

CIMG3409.JPG

* Bumped back plate allows 25mm of throw before bottoming out -- but the surround will stop the driver before that.

CIMG3410.JPG

* Exact same spider as the SA-8 but only a SINGLE layer instead of two like the SA-8

SPECIFICATIONS:

RE: 3.927 ohms

Fs: 43.59 Hz

Qes: 0.643

Qms: 4.404

Qts: 0.555

Le: 2.75 mH

Vas: 7.22 L

BL: 13.023 NA

Cms: 131 uM/N

Mms: 101 grams

Sens: 81.53 1w/1m

Xmax: 10.5mm one-way linear

Power: 200 RMS

-----

I am really excited about it... the design came out EXACTLY like I envisioned it... I really cannot give any ETA at all but I had to share since I was so pleased with it.

in the second picture, the cone and the suspension of the subwoofer on the right are those del'SA8 ?

I'm curious to see specifically the suspension, and coil ;)

This is a 150mm OD magnet and the E8 v.1 was 140mm OD -- so it gained 10mm of magnet OD. Thickness is the same.

Biggest motor size difference is in the top plate where this is 15mm and the E8 v.1 was 8mm. Back plate is also thicker on the v.2 model.

Wow! I like the classic steel basket with the cooling vents! And the top plate is huge!

Hey Jacob whats the chances of getting you the make me a 8" sundown midrange ? I would love to have all sundown speaker in the car. I know there won't be any tweeter any time soon but you already make 8's so I was think it wouldn't be to hard for you to make them into midranges (50-5000 hz) maybe another coil in with the OG setup for the E8.

I have to say that new E8 is a fantastic looking driver. woot.gif Although seeing it next to that SA-8 just makes me want mine that much worse :(. The suggestion of a Sundown mid-bass/mid-range is one of solid gold IMO, but even if it never comes to pass I'm sure it's been thought about. Keep up the great work guys, you continue to set yourselves apart from the mainstream brands and they have some real competition ahead of them trying to keep up with the quality products and A+++ customer service. Can't wait to hear these new E8's in action!

Here is a video of the suspension capacity of the DD 1508 vs. my E8 v.2 model prototype - I am pressing as hard as I can without pushing my fingers through the cone of the 1508 :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i80gi2_eLUE

Before anyone flips out on me... I am not talking down on the 1508 here just showing a comparison. The DD 1508 is still one of the higher power handling 8s on the market and is quite loud -- it is just not a high excursion driver.

Jacob please don't take this wrong. But I was wondering why a E8.v2 when you already have the SA-8? Are these going to be mainly midbass drivers? They look alittle deep for that. How do they compare to the SA-8. Is the E- Line going to be the entry Level sub or are the SA the entry level? I plan to add some SA-8 to my line up as a Midbass or will the E-8 be a better chose.

Because not everyone can fit the SA-8 -- the E8 v.2 is 1" shallower. They are still true sub-woofers -- the SA-8 has double the rated RMS power and 50% more linear excursion.

The E line is the "lowest" line -- SA is a step up.

So the E-8 wouldn't make a very good midbass ?

We are looking at $75 or so pre-sale cost -- so a bit more than the E8 v.1 and less than the SA-8 :)

When I'm ready to open ordering I'll make a post. I still need to nail down the Dual-4 version.

Dual-4 will have a bit higher Qts and Fs with a little lower motor force -- due to the skinnier wire. But, overall, specs will be quite similar to what is posted here.

SPL Testing in Sean's CRX -- Kick panel score @ 67 Hz.

CIMG3505.JPG

CIMG3506.JPG

CIMG3507.JPG

That was the most we could get -- the SA-8 has done 150.8 dB so far so this is a dB down from that.

Not too bad from the little guy!
