Wanted a Q....

Recommended Posts

Ok..My original plan was to go with a single 12" Q sub. However in my intro thread I was informed I would probably want to look at the BL instead. This is waht Ihave to work with:

1999 Mercury Cougar

Looking at about a 1.1ft^3 Sealed enclosure.

Amp: Kicker XS100 1200watts

I'm aware the Q is rated at 1000w rms. I didn't think the 1200 would be that big of a difference.

I read the BL is not a sealed enclosure friendly sub which kind of steered me on a differnt course. Any recommendations are welcome.

I'm trying to keep it in the $300 and below range if possible.

Thanks

It was hard to discern from your post if you still wanted a Q or if you are now leaning toward a BL but I have a 15" Fi Q in a ported box but i can take the sub out and sell just the sub... works well in both ported and sealed enclosures.

If your thinking of going sealed then your only options are FI Q and FI SSD.

Ok. I'm still getting used to the forum structure here and clicked a few things I probably shouldn't lol.

Either way...

I apologize about the confusion on my wanting the Q sub. That was what I was originally looking at when going over the options available to me. I'm looking at a 12 instead of the 15 to regain some hatch space. I love my bass as much as the next guy but I'm toning down some now. As far as the box size goes I MIGHT be able to 1.5 but that will be pushing it.

The BL was brought up I'm assuming because of the power being used. However its not supposed to be in a sealed box.

Jay-cee~You mentioned the SSD and the Q. Would the SSD be able to handle the power? I would think the Q would be a better fit.

Thanks again..

Just because your amp is rated at 1000 watts does not mean you have it send all of it to the sub, it doesnt mean that the sub will see the 1000 watts all the time neither since music is dynamic. There is no problem with having some headroom in an amplifier so dont worry about that just make sure you set your gains right.

The SSD is a daily driver sub and can be good in either sealed or ported. You can always turn the gain down if it cant handle it but it should be fine handling that amp. you would be better off getting the SSD. I think in your original post we said you werent a Q buyer based on what you wanted out of the sub not based on the amp. The SSD is a better fit if you were told to look into the BL. I would wait until the new models come out in March.

The problem you really have is what you want is the opposite of what you say you can fit. You'd be happiest with a larger ported box and a BL, but if you go sealed you will indeed need to choose differently.

What is limiting the box size? Personal decision or actual space?

Mainly personal decision. It is my daily so I do need some space available for groceries and the such. Back seats have to stay due to two kids.

I currently have an L5 15 inch in a pre-fab ported enclosure. It barely fits with my amps.

Maybe I should state better what I'd like. I'd like something that will sound good but if needed can be turned up to be felt good as well. WIll fit in a 1.3ft^3 sealed enclosure and handle midrange power.. I'vre had the 15s before..I've had each size sub under 18 inches. I'm not looking to win any SPL comps. I just want something I can bump daily and occasionally annoy smokers at stop lights...Honestly am I reaching too far on this one? I've had Kicker subs for the last 17 years without any complaints. I've read a few places about SSA and the different subs here. I'm looking to try something else :)

Any reccomendations now ?

Thanks again...

y dont u look at some other subs? like ssa, sundown, ascendant audio, dc, there is alot of different brands...ik the ssa subs get pretty loud sealed. u could do a 10" icon. just take a look at the ssa store, lots of subs in there that might suit u better.

Why do you want it to be sealed? How you have decribed what your goals are I think you would be better stepping down to a 10" sub and porting it. Just build a good enclosure for it and tune it to your liking and you will be more pleased than you would be having a sealed 12" sub.

You're sure you can't have more room for the box?

a 10" sub in a custom ported box would be a good choice : Fi BL, SSA Icon, FiQ,.....and many other 10" subs here.

The reason I am looking at sealed is box is for the smaller size. I'd like to have some trunk space left over after the install. With a ported box it will take up more room when done correctly. If I go with a 10" I could possibly squeeze a ported box in.

Miller- I just may do that.

you said 1.7 right? a 12 ported can fit in that, bare min but it will fit.. and a 10 will fit nicely ported.. or a couple of 8s?

I'll bet a 10 in an optimal enclosure will outperform a 12 in a "bare min" enclosure. 99.9% of the time.

1.3 ;)

Yes a 10 does sound optimal now.I haven't run 10's in 17 years..I feel like I'm working backwards. lol.

Anyway. Thank you for the insight to all of you. 10 it is.
