Fi Q questions

Recommended Posts

Yeah and no, but you keep saying you want a 15" if it is going to hit louder. Not trying to bash you but I dont think you want SQ or you dont have a good definition of it. A ported box is not all about SPL, built correctly and tuned right will give you a great sounding enclosure that has the ability to get loud.

I may be mixed up in my definitions. What I'm looking for Is a good sounding sub. I previously had a 15" kicker L5 in a sealed box that sounded decent to me. It got very loud but wasn't very musical. I am not wanting to win any SPL competitions, I just want a good sounding sub and I had read that the FI Q is a good choice. That is why I am in this forum.

Yes a 12" ported would sound good and a 15" sealed would also but the 12" would have more output. Like stated above, Ill take a 12" ported over a 15" sealed and day. Any FI sub will sound good in ported enclosure as long as it is a well built enclosure to Fi Recommended Specs and not a prefab box.

People think ported boxes do not have good SQ, because of prefab boxes (or boxes that are too small) that are not correct for the sub being used. Many of them I have seen are also tuned way too high.

Ported boxes built to spec with the correct amount of port area and tuning can sound awesome. . .

I know you guys say stay away from prefab boxes but are there some legit prefab boxes out there for those of use without a table saw handy??

What about this one for example:

NEW CAR AUDIO 15" VENTED SUBWOOFER PAINTED SUB BOX U - eBay (item 310199011810 end time Mar-07-10 15:45:17 PST)

just curious

No. Look at the builders on here or buy the MDF and let Lowes or Home Depot make the cuts for you. They will cut it for free. A prefab box will be crap.

As far as sealed vs ported, I like both. I have mine sealed right now and they sound very good and get loud. Apples to oranges because I have different subs, but still. I am about to make a change and go with some bigger subs and I will port them, but not beacuse sealed was not loud.

If i were you, I would build a sealed box, then if you want more output - build another and port it.

ok that answers my question. I've got a big piece of MDF right now but only have a skill saw to cut it and I was afraid the edges wouldn't be perfectly square. I was planning on a sealed enclosure anyways.

No, just do the math on it real quick. 3ft^3 gross, and with out knowing port dimensions you don't know tuning. After any type of port displacement in that box it is going to be way undersized for a 15" driver.

i believe you would be very happy with the Q's just as i am.... Ported is the way to go 32hz tuning is most optimal for daily driving music

What is up with the release date on it, there hasn't been anything about it being pushed back but it still isn't out yet.

Because they are still ironing out some things, when it is ready for sale they will have them available on the website.

Info should be up on the site over the weekend..if not Monday.

Probably look for them to start shipping around the end of the month if not the first of April.
