RE MX PROBLEM...

hi, i have access to 3 systems (1) is four 10" rf p3 on a 2000rms hifonics brutus

(2) is 2 12" alpine type r on a 2000rms hifonics brutus

(3) is a re xxx on a 2000rms hifonics brutus

now i bought a new re mx from a guy, its dual 2 and the sub was wired parallel, when i hooked it up to any of the 3 systems above the amp gets really hot like its on fire after like 4 songs.

another thing is with the mx hooked up it seems to draw alot more current than any of the above subs when hooked up to the amp, after the 4 songs when the amp gets so hott u can smell the heat of the amp, i decided to remove the sub from the box an "wow" the sub was really hott as well...can u help me out here plz....all systems hav big 3 upgrades an battery power to back up the amps so it comes down to amp or sub and the amps work perfect wit the other subs..

tested each coil with a digital multi meter an it had a 1.2 resistance (each coil)

what can u advice me here

are you sure they're dual 2's and not 1's? if it were dual 1's it would drop it below 1ohm and make the amp run hottter, those hifonics amps don't like being put under 1 ohm with out a very good electrical.

if each coil was 1.2 then u have a dual 1 sub.

You either need to get a recone, from FI or RE. Also you can wire it to 2 ohms it will be getting less wattage but it means no clipping or overheating,

Not quite, but it will make the amps work a little easier at 2 ohms.

Clipping will still depend on settings, and overheating will still be due to overdriving an amp.

your amp could be clipping also.

you might have the ggain set to high. if you do it will cause the sub to get warm because its clipping.

Or you bought a Maxxsonics product and realized it's a worthless fire hazard.

thanks for the reply fellas will look into to....actually i hav worked with countless maxxsonic products without any problem. this is the first and only with dis sub, no problem even wit the re xxx on the same amp..

less current draw = less energy wasted on heat

As apposed to being at .5ohm (which it will indefinitely clip unless you have a fairly good electrical behind it) it will clip less at 2 ohms than it would at .5

thanks guys....hooked up the sub in series....works gr8 now.....the sub seems to be dual 1 and the dude i bought it from told me its dual 2 :S

No! An amp will only clip and distort when you don't have things set right. Clipping is overdriving the amplifier. That happens when you try to output a voltage signal higher than the rail voltages, therefore "clipping" the top and bottom of the signal. That all happens when your gains are set too high, or bass boost is too high or on for that matter.

Clipping still will depend on amp and HU settings.

Go buy a dmm and next time you could just measure to be safe than sorry.

It has been explained over and over - The DMM reads DC resistance, not AC impedance. . .1.2 ohm DC resistance does not mean it is a Dual 1 ohm sub. Normally a Dual 2 will read 1.4 DCR on each coil, but a DMM torlerance could explain that. Did you make sure the DMM reads 0 when you touch the leads together? If it does, then you have more than likely have a Dual 2 ohm coil sub. If it reads something other than 0, you may have less than 1.2 ohms DCR and may have a Dual 1 ohm sub.

You more than likely are clipping the amp trying to get more output from it. You are comparing a single sub setup to other multi-sub setup. I would guess you are also turning the volume up higher trying to get more output from this single XXX? The XXX is not a high SPL sub, so that is another strike against it that make me think you may be clipping the amp trying to get the XXX to be as loud as the other setups.

Is this 3 different amps in 3 different vehicles that you have hooked the XXX to and they all got hot, or one amp in one vehicle and you have tried these 3 different subwoofer setups on it?
