From Icon to Xcon

Recommended Posts

Hello,

It is just a little review of my last subwoofer.

I was running an Icon 15 dvc 2 in a 3.5 cubic feet box tuned at 32 Hz.

The box was designed by Fisher customs and built by a friend for his xcon. He since, changed box, so I managed to get the old one!

The Icon is one of the most accurate sub I've ever heared. I love the fact that it is loud but can play ALL the bass notes. Lot of subs plays all the notes, but this one is quite flat : like if all the notes are played at the same (high) volume.

(My vocabulary is limited, so I can't really explain everything as I would !!!)

The amp is a Sundown saz 1000 d.

My car is a hatchback Toyota Auris.

Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures, they're coming from my Blackberry :(

So, I change my sub, and got a 15" Xcon.

The first listening sessions, I was sceptical. It was too "new" to play well : had to wait for breakin time.

I think that's it now!!!

The xcon is way more powerful : I feel the bass is really heavier, my car feels it too. The rain/or light sensor (I don't know what it is) in the windshield fell off. The rear view mirror had already been gone !!!

With the same power I am more and more happy. I think the sub plays as well as the Icon : I can listen to all kind of music, not only rap or r&b.

When I am listening to a Bob Marley song, I have all the basslines complete : with some other subs I had it was not so good. Maybe I had wrong boxes, but, for example, My Kicker L7 was in a sealed box, not the biggest one recommanded though, but not the smallest. And it was heavy but not accurate enough for me. I was missing some notes, these missing notes were there but not loud enough.

The Xcon gives me the heavy part I was missing with Icon. The Icon is a fantastic woofer, for sure, but the Xcon is more for real bassheads, like me !!! You feel like your car is going to fall apart !!! and you love it !!!

In résumé : if you want a lot of bass that is good sounding, go for the Icon !

If you want ridiculous bass that shakes your car and STILL sound really really good : go for the Xcon !!!

Don't forget that the xcon weight a lot more than the icon.

I hope this little review will be helpfull for those interested in ssa subs.

If you need some more informations, you can pm me.

Forget to say that I live in a French speaking island in the Carribbeans, and SSA take care of me as if I was their next neighbor !!!

All my questions were answered, and all my requests were accepted : shipper, info on box,...

Congratulations to SSA .

Icon on steroïds : exactly !!!

I've heared one xcon on 2 saz 1000 d in a very small french car (Renault Clio for those who knows) : it's insanely loud and heavy ! People, with "little" spl setups were telling my friend to leave the car while playing so loud !!! He has a lot of speakers in his 2 doors on a jbl crown amplifier( bpx 300.4 or something like that).

I was sad I did not have a good camera to watch their faces : they all were shocked by the loudness, the accuracy, and the way this sub was hiting the low notes !!! They never saw that in their lives. Some tried to go to the ssa website, but they don't understand English !!!!!peepwall.gif

Now that would not be legal for production. ;)

Except the Icon and the Xcon 15"s ?

  • Kicker L7, 06 and 08 models; in several sealed boxes; from 2 to 6 ft3, on 1000-1200 watts : loud, loud, low, but... they were not "accurate" enough for me. But not a bad sub like a lot of people say !
  • Impact Car Audio 67 series(15") : an Italian monster on the lows in a "small" ported box
  • Alpine swd 3000 and other lower lines. I've heard the Type X in sealed boxes, but did not like it.
  • several Pioneer entry level subs
  • lots of Audiopipe and old Audiobahn in my country
  • ...

i can agree about the icon. i went from kicker comp vr 15s powered by a us amp to a fosgate T1 powered by a jl 1000/v2 in a ported box to an icon on the same amp and in the same box and it was a trememdous difference. the box was tuned a lil high for the icon tho but it would still get really low and played really clear. now i have an xcon on order and have a 4cu 33hz box waiting for it and trying to decide if i wanna leave the jl in my truck or put the sundown in it
