center channel

my boss wants me to build him a nice center channel for his house, cause i do all the car audio for everyone at the shop. but what does a center channel consist of? isn't it usually like 2 4's and a tweet, or something like that? what freq range does this channel need to cover. is there any other pertinant information that i should know before attempting to build this?

The most important info? Make sure it's timbre-matched to the rest of the surround. For movies, a lot of the material (dialogue, center effects) are covered by the CC, so you want to make sure it blends nicely with the rest of the soundstage.

What are his other speakers? How much does he want to spend for just speakers and crossovers for the CC?

ok... he has dynaudio 4" w/ 1" tweet. and need a 6-8ohm load. he said he was thinking of 4-4" or 5.25" and a 1" tweet.

i looked around for dynaudio speakers, but all i could find was ebay had 2 5.25's for $300 and 2 1" for $300. i don't think he wants to spend $600 just for speakers...he might though. but either way could someone help me find something a little cheaper that will match real good? say around $300 for all the speakers?

Hmmm... well Dynaudio doesn't sell raw drivers anymore, so its probably out of the question to have a Dyn CC. An easy and fairly inexpensive route would be this:

Dynavox and HIVI are very similar to the DYNs. A great alternative for the DIYer.

i was looking at the HIVI's. they look like some pretty solid drivers. i kinda like the yellow too so they're a pretty close match? i think thats probably what we'll go with then.

Dynavox and Max Fidelity came about as Dyn clones after Dyn left the DIY market. HiVi just happens to have a line with big VC's (which was the most notable characteristic of the Dyn mids). HiVi does have some good stuff though, but they are really diverse and I've only had a chance to listen to a couple of their speakers.

BTW If you are making your own design, how do you plan on designing the crossover?
