50A alt, is ~350 watts too much?

Recommended Posts

I just got a daihatsu rocky, and the wife is going to take over my accord, so Im ripping out my stereo equipment. 2 problems though, no room in there for 3 subs and tools, and also, not enough alternator for 1150 watts.

I am going to sell my hifonics amp, and put her fosgate amp and RE sub in my accord for her. I am going to get a cheap used 2ch for the comps and take my infinity amp back as well. I was thinking about running this in the rocky and either running the front channels to the coax's, and bridge the rears to one of my 10's. OR I will just run the coax's off my deck and bridge the fronts to one 10, and the rears to another 10.

but I am just wondering if a 50A alt is going to be enough for around 350 watts... and I can run this off of 8 gauge, right? its a SHORT vehicle so the whole power run will be about 6-7 feet probably.

no if you have a 350 watt amp you will need 30 amps for that alone.....PLUS that 50 amps is probably what the alt makes at max power, and you have to figure in what the car will need to run. you could probably get a good amg cell bat and a smaller pully for that alt and you will should be ok, or go with a ho unit.

wow, they really only 50A?

My car only pulls 9.5A. That's with no heater and no lights on.

I havent measured it with those on.

You don't need a smaller pulley, lol. All that's gonna do is give you higher amperage at slightly lower rpms and with a stock alt, they do pretty good idle output compared to their max output.

A smaller pulley will not make the alt produce an overall higher output, that's impossible. It's still a 50A alt.

I'd install the amp but take it easy. Measure battery's voltage everyday for the next week couple hrs after the car has been off so the surface charge won't interfere with the reading.

If the battery's voltage is reading 12.7 or lower then you need to be careful as the alt isn't keepin it fully charged.

Also when driving below ~1,000rpm, don't be experimenting with current draw, keep it down at low speeds.

oh, this thing has 5.28's stock and still on stock 205/75/15's. there is NO such thing as low RPM driving. when I take off from a stop sign, turning a corner, I am shifting into third right before I even straighten it out. at 60MPH in 5th I am revving over 3500. I cruise at 30-35 in 5th gear around here on the slow roads. I havent swapped over the equipment yet, wife hasnt turned her car in yet, and I dont need to swap equipment until then. I might have my hifonics amp, and PPI subs sold. I was thinking of a single DCON 10, but theres no D2, and a need a 4 ohm load, so to save money I was thinking of just getting a PCX102 again(have em all sold for basically what I bought em for) unless of course it wouldnt hurt the sub to bridge the rears to one coil, and the fronts bridged to another, the front channels might go to some coax's, so I doubt Ill be using the full 75x2 on the front channels.
