Probably a dumb question

As I stated in another topic, I burnt one of the voice coils in one of my 12" SSDs. One of the voice coils is still fine. I was just wondering...until I get the recone kit in the mail, is there any way to wire up my amp to just one of the voice coils? The reason I thought about this is I did the AA battery test (hooking up the + and - to the sub to hear the pop) and since that made noise, I was thinking maybe it could run off one voice coil.

If that is possible, would it be bad to have one sub like that and one sub wired normally? Technically wouldn't it just be 1.5 ohms? My amp is 1 ohm stable.

It's just like using an SVC speaker, ignore the other set of terminals, remember power handling will be cut in half.

If you burned one coil, I would check into to see what I did wrong to burn a coil or otherwise you will burn that second coil also.

I'm overpowering them a bit. They're on a Hifonics BXi-2608D at 1-ohm. Since Hifonics overrates their amps I'm probably getting around 2000 watts RMS. I tend to crank them a little higher than I should for longer than I should haha. But I learned my lesson blowing that coil.

I have a recone kit coming in the mail so no biggie if I do burn the second coil technically. But no reason to be reckless

One thing though...the sub that is running on one coil seems to be doing more work. Like, there's more excursion. Is that normal?

On a side note, I finally installed the dynamat trunk kit I got from my parents for Christmas. What a difference

you probably clipped it and it got too hot from the bad signal. The SSDs can handle that amp easy.

It's a mono amp. So no. The amp has two positives and negatives, but they're connected inside into one channel.

What exactly do you mean? Like I had my head unit settings too high, not the amp?

Either you had bass boost on (either on your head unit or amp or both which is a no-no), you had the loudness feature on your radio on, your gains are set to high on your amp, you probably turned the volume knob to high which in turn made the amp stop clipping among other things.

How are they wired?

If you have one dual voice coil sub and one "single" voice coil sub wired to the same mono amp, you could actually be giving the "single" voice coil sub more power depending on how they are wired.

That is why it looks like it is working harder.

Let me see if I can explain the wiring. On the working sub, I have my amp going to the positive of one voice coil, and the negative of the other coil. Then, I have a wire going from the remaining negative of the first coil to the positive of the other coil. On the other sub, I just have it wired to the positive and negative of the working coil.

You have a "2 ohm" sub and a "1 ohm" sub in parallel. The 1 ohm sub is going to get double power due to the current flowing through it.

In your case, there is a final load of .67 ohms (which is hard on that amp).

Lets say you have 1000 watts coming from the amp.

P = V^2/R, so you have a voltage of ~26 volts (26^2/.67 = 1009 watts)

Now calculate each sub power using the voltage and resistance:

The 2 ohm sub = 26^2/2 = ~338 watts

The 1 ohm sub = 26^2/1 = ~676 watts

The sub with only 1 coil connected is getting double the power of the sub with both coils connected.

Looks like you will toast the other coil on that sub soon, and maybe even that amp with the low ohm load. . .
