Best enclosure design for ssa xcon??

Recommended Posts

I just bought a ssa xcon 15" dual 2ohm, it will be arriving in about a week or so. So I would like to know the best setup and design for my enclosure, I have already played a lot with WinISD and I have come to the conclusion that a enclosure of 4 cubic feet tuned to 29hz would be best. But does box shape affect the sound at all? Also are slot ports the best port for good deep bass? I already know having my sub pointed to the rear has the best sound response in my station wagon, and cadillac alike. And to add I would like the height for my enclosure that is going to be pointed to the rear to be only 16" is this a good idea. any suggestions?

There is no effective difference between slot and round ports. They don't give any distinct sound or help it in different ways. What kind of box shape were you thinking about? For the most part, no, it doesn't have any affect.

4 cubes at 29 hz sounds good. And no problem with the height only being 16". I think the mounting diameter is just within the inside height of the enclosure.

I was just thinking the traditional cube shaped enclosure, thanks for your response.

Whats the difference between the port pointing in the same direction as the woofer, or upwards or towards the opposite direction?

I know that you can port in the same direction or if sub is firing up and port to the rear then your ok, but the sub and port in opposite directions is not a good idea.

4 cubes at 29hz would be very nice. :)

Why is having subs and port on opposite ends of the box bad?

It has something to do with cancellation. I think....

I listened and made my port on the same side as my woofer. And it sounds great.

The wave out of the sub in back and the wave out of the port in front won't be in phase because the one in front just has to move into the cabin, whereas the wave from the sub has to go back into the trunk, bounce off something, then go back forward into the cabin. It most likely won't cause cancellation because subbass frequencies have too long of a wave length, but the waves just won't reinforce each other quite as well.

Curious as to what you mean by "best" and what decisions went into that.

Shape doesn't really matter. :)
