system in a vw bug?????

Recommended Posts

So... me and my dad are in the process of rebuilding a 1970 vw bug, and of course... i plan on putting a system into it. the main problem will be with the placement of the subwoofers, bugs are tiny vehicals with almost no extra space. we would prefer to keep a backseat but would be willing to give it up if need be. So does anyone have any ideas for a good subwoofer and somewhere to put it. money shouldnt be too much of an issue but it must be within reason... Im going for SQ but would still like it to get hella loud. i was thinking maybe 2 10in Fi SSds in a sealed box... any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

My next question isnt really fabrication but while im at it.... has anyone delt with the electrical system of a 1970 beetle? i believe its a 12 volt system but im not sure.... would i be able to run a HO alt off of a little 1700 engine? any other ideas? thanks

How much room you got son? What are you listening to with said system? What is within reason? Within reason for Bill Gates' system would be a lot different than mine.

for 6 volt or 12 volt I don't know, but google does apparently.

type "vw beetle 1970 electrical 6 volt" in and it should give websites with a history of the car, telling when the change from the old 6 volt system to 12 volts occurred.

A '70 bug is all 12v from the factory. You'll have enough room behind the seat to put 2 10"s ported if you can get creative enough. I've done it, and seen it done many times. They make HO alts, but I believe they max out at like 80-100amps. So you may want to see about adding another batt or 2 under the front hood/trunk or under the other side of the back seat.

Then you need to completely forget about worrying about the subs and start planning the front stage. There really isn't much room for real drivers up front in those...and even when I put 6.5's in the doors of my '59 they shook and rattled everything.

yeah, the front stage is going to be another mission all together. I have seen it doen with some custom made kickpannels holding the components along with some 3.5in speakers up in the dash but i have no experience with fiberglass and wouldnt know where to start. i have yet to look if i can get anythin online, thats my plan over the next few days. As for the ratteling, this bug is in such bad shape at the moment that im able to get to every inch of body so i plan on dynomatting all of the floor, doors, and the back near the engine, im hoping that will help keep it quiet.

Panel resonance was a problem, but not the biggest one. Everything that moved rattled and required treatment. The noisefloor of the car was really high as well and dynomat won't help so much with that. You need a vinyl barrier.

I'd focus on that and ignore the sub choices for now because until that is nailed it is pointless to think about a sub for an SQ setup.

What I did with my 66 bug for sound deadning back in 96 was rhino lineing. Its all I could think of doing back then. I had it done top to bottom cause the car was stripped for painting. As far as the front stage went I made fiberglass panels and built the kick panels out. I had a 3 way system with fosgate 6 1/2's, 4's, and tweets. I think there is a company that makes fiberglass panels for the old bugs I cant remember the name. You could look in any VW mag. and find out or you can e-mail the magazines. Bass wise I kept the back seat and had 4-8's back there in a sealed box so you can do 2-10's in a ported box back there. As far as electrical I think you can get a 100 amp alternator now mine was only 75. Just get a battery isolater and have 2 yellow top Optima's or what ever will fit in the 2 spots under the back seat. 1 under each side of the back seat. They will fit its what I did with mine except mine where red. I hope this helped you a little bit.
