Mecp Certification

Recommended Posts

I am a Mecp advanced level installer working on my masters certification, and I was just wondering I work for Best Buy and the certifications are mainly for pay raises because you make a lot more if your certified. Anyway my question is how much does the certifications matter outside of buisness like Best Buy. I have looked at a lot of job opportunites and none of them really seem to care if your certified or not as long as you can install.

yep, that's what i've heard too.

From what i hear, people who can show proof of their work via pics should prove to a company that you have what it takes.

Experience owns.

Yea thats definately true I have been installing since 96 and have done a lot of custom installs including a demo car for pioneer, if anyone remembers the integra's they used to use for demo cars. That was how i got the job at best buy i wasnt certified when i started, but when i saw the pay scale, and the dramatic increase, I figured wha the hell i better get my paper.

Considering how ridiculously easy the test is when it is on topic I don't see how it would help. The off topic BS is absurd.

Go for it if it gets you a raise, not like it is hard :)

MECP certification is a joke and most of the better shops realize this.

To your average teenager or young adult who is "in the know" it probally won't matter much. However for a middle age adult, with no experience with the car audio world bringing in their vehicle or a vehicle for their son or daughter, having that "certified" title might put them at ease and make them feel more comfortable with the buying experience.

here are some points I have noticed about mecp certification you can get it I have seen silver, gold ,etc ... but why get it in some states they require 5 years of apprenticeship to work on your own in auto electrical like wiring car engines. This is where there is a divide its ridicules to get a mecp cert in installing because it's like getting a cert from a accredited school from the back of a magazine should just go for gun smiting lol's. Although schools like installer institute are good they give you the hands on needed to succeed in this field. Then there is the point on those schools it an out dated profession. In 95-96 around here there was a surge in consumer electronics for auto's and the idea this could be a profession was brought up. Right now if you got a degree from Wyo tech or the like you’re golden but will it be a dead fad in a few year like car audio who knows. And yes car audio was bigger back in the day then it is today. And is dead compared to tuning imports but has been making a comeback.

Experience is key no matter what field it is and how many degrees or certificates you have

I am not certified, and have been installing for over a year. Experience is the key like mention before a few times.

The other 2 installers I work with are certified but nothing more to my knowledge. When I was offered the position, there was never a question as to if I was certified. But get the Master status and get a raise!
