Why doesnt my Q 12 work?

Recommended Posts

I would recommend you do the Big # wiring in the car while you dont have any subs. Where I just told you a minute ago in one of the post (those should be your head unit settings). I was gonna say use your ear to determine how to set the gain but that doesnt work in your case, get a DMM (even though is not the most accurate but will be better than you using your ears).

No bass boost head unit or amp, no loudness on head unit either. Low Pass on amp between 65-100Hz, depends on your preference (80hz is the norm).

Few things wrong here...

1) bass boost.

2) subsonic filter.

Bass boost 'Boosts' a certain frequency when it hits...if you are already over driving the amp it will cause it to 'try' to do that 6dB of boost...even though it cant do it.

Subsonic filter on that amplifier is on or off at 25Hz if i remember correctly at 12db/octave which is a VERY shallow slope. Using that amp and no other filtering means you could tune your enclosure no higher than 28Hz. Otherwise you will be playing full power far below tuning of the enclosure..in turn yanking the soft parts to/past the mechanical limits of the suspension...

We've had a few Q's burn up on those amps because of this exact problem. To think it only costs a manufacturer 3 bucks to make an adjustable subsonic filter on top of the one that they already have simply baffles me. We make long coil high excursion subs...we do not want to take a different approach and put 30 spiders on the subs and use a 1" long coil...which results in no excursion...

Please email [email protected] as I am out of town until January.

So now whats my best plan of attack. Buy a crossover with a built-in subsonic filter? New amp and sub repair? Clearly I'd like to go the cheapest route, while still maintaining my sound quality and simplicity.

Tuning the box lower will help a little. As will just turning down the volume on songs you know have notes below your tuning frequency.

Cold won't burn voice coils. Too much power does. If the voice coil is messed up, as it seems to be, that is just from putting too much power to it. Even if it's the tinsel leads messed up, after 6 months that's no longer a manufacturer defect, either. Overpowering a sub will eventually kill it, sometimes it's just a little-by-little process.

It must have clipped then. I'm only running 1000w with the gain all the way down.

That isn't a valid gain setting. 1000w and gain all down does NOT equal "only 1000w". Set them correctly next time, but first figure out where you need your other settings so this doesn't happen again.

Please get the sub back to us to check out.

Please be sure to include a sheet of paper with your name, address, phone, and email so we can have a tech contact you.

MRDs or any amps with preset or no subsonic filter will allow for problems to arise with high excursion subs in ported applications. We always recommend an amp with an adjustable filter, or some other sort of processing with an adjustable filter. Makes things last MUCH longer.

Thanks,

Scott
