Thermodynamics and SPL

would someone like to try to explain the effects that I am starting to notice with the serious increase in humidity and temperature?

I have a faint Idea, but I was curious to hear from more experienced SPL'ers

Well, the Finn's use humidifiers in their spl cars. Thats all I know. I couldn't explain the effects of it on spl.

See if You can get Nick in here. NDMStang... he's the current acoustic's nut :lol: ...and smart.

Otherwise... If You search around the dBDrag site, You'll see a few competitors using BIG ac / condensor / humidifier type units... Cold air is denser, therefore will be 'heavier' when compressed by the pistonic motions and waves. at least thats the theory as i remember it.

That doesnt answer much for You, I'm sorry, but the root's technical side of this is outta my league & experience.

heat would essentially make the rise go up right.

Moisture would make it also go up because that moisture is being heated like a catalyst.

Thats with heat though..

Thats my thoughts, havn't even taken the class yet, heard its hard as hell.

hmm, well sound travels more at night.

Because it is colder or something like that i kinda remember it from physics.

Something about camping and at night hearing people whisper across the lake, lol. good times

So your saying if i have the air conditioner on while at a comp it will be louder?

And can i put some vents into the trunk to make it icy cold in there as well and see results...

the problem with running the car's AC system is that it draws amperage away from Your battery....

External AC is better.

Dry Ice is tits.

Meh,

simple logic, Colder=More dense, the more dense it is the closer the molicles are. Remember that sound is a compresion wave, so one molucule has to bump into the next causing a rise then drop in pressure following the wave pattern. because the molicules are closer togather they more efficently the transfer of energy is.

think of it like that cradle thing (i forget the name) with the 5 balls. the balls are molicules, idealy they would be touching, but that is near imposible iwth a gas, so lets move thoes balls arpat, the closer they are to each otehr the more efficently they will transfer the mechanical energy form the swinging balls.

Humidity also raises the density of air, so it will have the same effect, to raise the density of air a whole lot you have to cool it quite a bit, so loading the air to 100% humidity is the easier way to get maximum density.

Just and FYI

if you want to try using a compresed gas to cool the air, look at the molar mass of each gas, the safest with highest molar mass will be best beause it will be most dense since 1mol of any gas is 22.1@STP (if memory serves) (STP=274? kelvin which is 0 celcius and 1atm, 101.27kPa, etc...) so the gas with the greatest molar mass will be most dense because it will have the greater mass per volume.
