Melted Terminal

Recommended Posts

well the positive on the box terminal melted and warped. this is the second time it has melted but the first time it didn't get ruined completely. but this time it did.

2-1.jpg

the wiring from inside side of terminal to sub is 12g and the wire on the outside side to amp is 16g

for 2000 watts rms i know it should be 8g. i know. but havent had the money to buy any yet.

both times this has happened it has been the same case: the sub wouldnt hit until almost at 2/3 volume. or if i messed around with the terminal peices. (tightened and loosened them)

in the first case i came to the conclusion that the two gold prongs that you see in the pictures on the inside side of the terminals were touching making it melt etc etc

but in this case i dont think the prongs im talking about were touching. so could it be that the 16g isnt sufficent enough?

this might be so pointless and stupid but i have more questions from there...

thanks.

Dont use them again ever, to much current trying to pass through those terminals and they wont hold up. Just get you some 8 guage, 10 guage or 12 gauge wiring and use it from sub to amp and call it a day (find another way to run the wire from sub to amp also).

i was going to make my own terminals with two threaded peices and nuts+washers.

no?

i know you made your own box. what'd u use?

I've seen people drill holes and run wire through then simply silicone the hole shut. I had that same thing happen with my first system, however when the plastic melted, the two terminals ended up shorting thus sending my amp into protect. Thank god for protection circuits!

Hey don't worry, I've seen much much worse. I had to work on a car, and they has a car audio plate amp, but for some reason it was sitting in a salad bowl. The hole that the plate used to be in was probably 8"x 8" and they maybe had 4 or 5 screws holding a piece of sheet metal to cover the hole.

I had a picture of it but I guess I took it off, but I did what todd.brust said to do (just drill hole and cover with silicone). Or you can do the nuts, waher and bolts thing; either is a good choice and recommended. I still havent decided how I want to do my new box Im gonna be doing, but that is neither her nor there (it will be one of those two methods though). Good luck on the 3 inch circle though, he maybe its time to for some practice and do a new box fing05.gif

oh shit. light bulb!

since my amp is mounted on the top of my box. i will drill holes right in front of the speaker terminals and run the wire up through that.

it'll be clean=less danglin wire

=and save me money=less wire

no?

The small wire had nothing to do with this issue. If the wire was too small it would have melted, not the terminal. The terminal just wasn't up to snuff.

Yeah I dont see why that wont work, just make sure you caulk the hole up with silicone or you could also use that bolt method two but it sounds like a good idea.

Oh yeah, forgot to add that I just drill a hole through my boxes and run the wire straight through then seal up the hole. :+1:

I run my wires straight out of the port. If youre not competing, then it doesnt matter.

well i just ran the wire right out of the hole for now straight to the amp.. i had to move the amp but thats fine for now.

i also stuck a towel in the hole for now so the tuning isnt off

but i did notice the it sounded a bit louder. but i could be wrong.

Because of the wire is not seperated and one whole size, less resistance than using those terminals. I noticed that two when I upgraded my wire to 8 gauge.

I do that or do DIY terminal bolts.

Another reason why speaker terminals plus high current sucks. I would just create one with a washer and bolts, etc, or just wire it straight to the sub. Which is what I always do.
