old btl vs new ?

Recommended Posts

Old BTL's had 3 slugs....... :-/

They came with 2. The 3rd slug was an option.

That's just dumb. :(

"djmedik91- if the two 15" BTL's are fully loaded (built for daily use) then I would recommend two 15's over a single 18 any day. more cone area, and higher potential of power handling so potential to be louder. although I have seen a single 18 do over 170db! (wasn't a BTL, but it was a single 18)"

According to my seller, these are the SPL subs so I am concerned about them not being built for daily use. I am not really looking for competition at this time and would like something that is going to play my music decently, and also subs that will take my breath away when I want them to. I don't want to have to buy these 15"s and then re-cone them just to have them sound decent. They are the triple stack magnets.

I guess I could just procure one of the 15's and see how I like it. But then again, not too many people around where I live have heard of the Fi's and I''d be worried about trying to sell it.......................

Adrian- magnet weight is less on newer style than the older style with 3 slugs. newer magnet is much larger diameter around the pole piece though, which actually has more effect than a longer magnet.

I suspected that it's lighter but it was just for my own curiosity :)

Lets get this back on topic, so OP what have you decided to do (buy old if you can find one or buy new)?

well it seems that the old 2 slugs don't fit what i need them to do.

it does seem like comps. are based on music.

so i would need either a 3 slug or new 1 slug daily.

unless some one shows me an advantage to the 3 slug i will be getting the new 1 slug.

this isn't for my daily use so i don't care what they sound like .

and thanks all for your help i was looking at a 2 slug and it would have been a wast of time it seems.

I gained .7 dB with (4) 15's on 14000 watts going from 3 slug BTL's to new single

slug. Both were long coil, dual 1, and dual 1 daily gap.

If you buy the old used model, make sure you get good pictures of the tensil leads to make sure they are in good shape before you buy. The BTL's have so much excursion, people are bad about slapping the cone into the spider landing, which kills the leads.

Brian

thanks some good advice,

i don't mind reconing as long as it was fit into the price at purchace.

Looks like my option is out. My seller just e-mailed me my answers. These are not going to be for me. These 15"s are purely for SPL capable of the 170's.

Back to the drawing board!

You say comps are based on music so you need it to be daily. Then you say its not for daily use and you dont care what it sounds like which sounds just like the SPL version. Which one is it?

as far as i have figured out,

the spl version is only for controled tones, no music of any kind .

and comps are mostly based on music .

so even though this is for comps only i would need daily gap.

please correct me if i'm wrong because if the spl gap would work then of coarse i would rather it.

but this is for fun with my kids so i'm not looking to rub coils for .1 db gain.

and for my daily setup i have a fi q15 so the btl doesn't have to sound good

it's ok if it does sound good.

You are correct about your assumptions on the SPL version. The daily is all you need. The SPL is definately not for music. Btw...the BTL will sound good.

what effect on spl will the xmax coil have.

i get that it is for more excursion but is that at the expense of spl ?

and if so how much ?

or is it realy an upgrade either way .

also is xmax coil interchangeable or is the motor different when ordered with xmax coil?
