10" Fi Bl Box Problems

Recommended Posts

hey guys, i used the re box calculator to make a box for my 10" fi bl. the box is 1.457 cubes for my sub after port displacement. the port is tuned to 33 hz. it doesnt sound good at all. i followed the cutsheets and everything and there is no leaks in the box that i can find. im just kinda wondering why it doesnt sound good. also, i used 3/4 inch mdf for everything but the baffle and the back. i used 3/4 plywood for that. could that be why it doesnt sound good? please any help would b great. thanx.

idk it kinda sounds dull, not very loud, almost like its blown, but i gently pushed in on the cone and there was no scratching or anything, so i dont think its blown. it sounds like there is a pretty good sized leak in the box, but i felt all around and no air coming out anywhere but the port.

It might be the box since you used plywood and mdf together, did you get the sub used?

i don't think that two different wood types were used was the problem.

The different woods shouldn't make that much of a difference, since they are both 3/4 thick. How are your settings on your amp?

What amp are you running it with?

low pass filter is set at about 29 hz, the high pass filter is set at 80. bass boost off bass eq all the way down, and i havnt set the gains yet, but its probably around 900 watts. the amp is a hifonics 1610d.

im thinkin maybe i should build another box...i really think it has to be the box, bc the other box i had it in sounded alright, just had the port firing towards the side and didnt hit the lows, i figured if i tuned it to 33 hz where its supposed to be, and fired the port to the back that i would sound better.

Guess and check can be a real pain in the ass, but that is usually what it takes. Ive used that calc to build both of my current boxes and they sound great so I hope its not that.

how much port area and you do know you have to take away for sub disp as well. so that brings your after disp to 1.3ish cubic feet. also effects tuning. probly tuned higher now like 35-36.

I hope you mean highpass (subsonic) at 29 hz and lowpass at 80 hz.

yea thats what i meant. and ik the box needs to have the sub subtracted, but the re program doesnt have that input so i made the box on the bigger side to bring it to about 1.3 cubes after sub and port, and the sub just doesnt perform well all around. i put the sub facing up and it still sounds like crap but a little better, what im thinking is that maybe the plywood i used was crappy so its flexing...would that be a possibility? square port area says 21...im guessing inches, and the total port length is 31.

your tuned to almost 35 hz. like 34.75 hz. lol. port area is good. i would try to replace the "crappy" ply wood if possible.

maybe brace it?

yea i didnt think it could b the tune bc even a tune at 35 hz wouldnt sound bad. what program do u use for ur calculations?

this and a piece of paper. the only real way to do it is by hand.

lol i got winisd, but im not 100 percent sure how to use it...it was pretty complicated for me. i want to figure it out tho.

ive heard some bad things about winisd. never used it personally so i dont know first hand just hear say. like the tuning and it telling how it will react in a vehical are off a bit. but like i said im not sure.

basically to do a box design by hand you really only need SOME algebra skills. not much tho. its all basic math.

lol. Okay, WinISD cannot tell you how your sub will respond in the car because all cars are different. It isn't wrong though on box tuning and calculations.
