problem with head unit output

Recommended Posts

I recently had an apline head unit installed in a toyota camry. I have a memphis audio amplifier pushing four 6X9's and an JBL amplifier pushing two subwoofers. Everything was working fine in my jeep and then yesterday when it was installed in my camry this happened. The head unit puts out an audio signal to the amplifiers only when using the radio, the cd player and ipod can't be heard through the speakers connected to external amplifiers ( but the cd and ipod can be heard through the speakers that are being pushed through the head unit's internal amplifier).

o wwow that sounds like an odd issue. is there a RESET button on your h/u anywhere? i know for kenwood h/u whenever somethign screws up simply push the reset button and you are bakc up and running in no time!

but your issue sounds like a bad h/u. maybe when it was removed somethign got crossed or somethign odd happened like someone dropped it.

question who did the install in the car from the jeep? (who did the swap) a buddy a shop or yourself?

Best Buy did, the guy was baffled, he was thinking something was wrong with head unit, but it was working perfectly fine when it was removed an hour before?! I am suppose to go back Thursday to let him look at it again. Yea it has a reset button, I tried that but it didn't do anything. I was there watching him remove and install it, didn't notice him drop it or something.

Granted, I should have said something but I haven't installed car audio stuff in 9 years, he didn't disconnect the battery when he was doing the installation. When I was leaving, I noticed my dash lights weren't working anymore, brought it back in, the fuse had blown. I am thinking maybe the fuse is blown or damaged on the head unit, maybe not able to put strong enough signal

well i would simply go bakc and say hey somethign is wrong here. have them do a trouble shoot since they installed it to determine your issue. first have them swap the h/u out with the same one so you don't have to rewire it and if that fix's it tell them why did my old one break? and maybe you will get a free h/u if it is there fault.

but then agian i have never delt with any install shop i do all my own work so if i mess up somewhere i am to blame and it is all my fault! so in that way i learn from my mistake!

but for sure take it bakc and say you guys did somehting now fix it! mabye tlk to a manager and tell them what is up and jsut maybe you will get something nice from them! lol!

but wiat a day and see who else will chime in on this topic!

also what is the model number of your h/u (head unit the alpine)

but it kind a sounds like a setting to me. kind a like aux off or something like that. i am not 2 familiar with alpine but i got a buddy who loves those h/u i will ask him and see what he says about it. but i need to know your model number. and if best buy can't help you out give alpine a quick call and ask them when they recommend!

and don't forget to repport back here with your findings!

it is an alpine cda-9856. Yeah I called alpine today, they are thinking the guy might have connected ( dealing with head unit and wiring harness) the amp turn on to the radio, and not the amp turn on. I do remember the guy playing around with that when I told him the cd player wasn't working. Granted he was pretty worn out from all the work he did, spent 7 hours putting everything together the way I wanted

ha yeah, he was able to put my higher end jbl 6x9's in the doors and keep the factory look of the car, extremely tight fit but possible with precise modifications. thanks for your help, I will check back tomorrow and let the forum know how things turn out

Well to find out if the remote isn't wired correctly, just go back to the amps and see if they're on.

Yeah they are not turning on when trying to play cd or ipod, they do turn on with radio. I remember him going back and looking at wires when I noticed the problem, I am hoping he got the wires mixed up, but I remember him saying blue/white wire is amp turn on so I am not sure how he got it mixed up when connecting them.

hope I am allowed to ask this here. he put a 60A fuse coming off the battery terminal, my jbl amp pushing subs has 2X20A fuse and my memphis audio amp has a 40A fuse. I am thinking he should have put 80A fuse coming off the battery and this would explain why my subs are not pushing like they were previously?

You should always put a fuse before/after any battery, close to the battery, even with the fuses on the amp. And no, that isn't the problem. If the fuse was too small the fuse would blow, and it shouldn't be blown if you hear output from the radio.

If the amps aren't turning on with the cd but are with the radio it sounds like he has the remote wired to the wrong wire from the head unit. Or else there is some setting on the head unit to turn on voltage down that line while playing different sources that may have been reset when it was disconnected from power.

As for the fuse, brandonf is right. Too small of a fuse causes no problems other than it might blow. I have had only an 80 amp fuse on amps with up to 140 amps combined for years and never had a problem.

If they aren't as loud it is likely because of some head unit setting. If you had the bass turned up on the head unit before, unplugging the power resets those settings, so it's now at 0.

the remote wire is hooked up to the power antenna wire on the indash...i have done this before, so when the radio is on it sends the signal to ur amp but when the cd player is on there is no signal being sent, bc the antenna isnt being used.
