Some songs sound weird. Why?

Recommended Posts

How do i tell if its my sub or my box or my tuning that is making certain notes hit weird like the song run this town by jay z sounds like s**t in my car. Btw i have an L715 in a 4.44 cubic ft internal box tuned to 34hz and it is ran by a kx1200.1 that does 1400 rms. Thanks.

Sounds wierd like how, need more information. You probably have to much power going to the sub(how did you set the gains on the amplifier)? The fact that you dont have a Sub Sonic Filter on that amp may be a problem too (I would suggest selling that amp and getting a new one (you need a SSF and not a set one either, one that can be adjustable).

Don't know much about your install but some songs can be clipped....some times the material itself can be clipped... if you have a cd or a song on your computer that has been compressed or copied many times that can cause problems. I have a few songs I got for free ( if ya know what I mean) and I got the same exact same CD as a gift and they are two totally different songs from 30 htz and under

i mean like the notes dont sound good they seem like they should hit differently. My gain is set around 3/4 of the way. My amp does have a subsonic filter but it only goes on or off. Some songs like run this town by jay z. Some songs even on cd sound weird but maybe thats cause they are bootlegs. How can i check if my box is completly sealed up tight? Would the real like storebought cd sound better? All opinions are appreciated

Yes the real store brought cd's will be way better than anything downloaded (mp3 or anything). Thats why I keep two in the car when I want to go all out.

I wasnt looking close enough and yes you do have a sub sonic filter but its a fixed one (25Hz), I still think this may be your problem or that your gains arent properly set (I advise you get a DMM and set them right, being at 3/4 doesnt mean anything you still can be clipping the amp also).

I have a dmm but cant figure out how to use it

Well Google and search can be your best friend in life if you chose to use it (I got plenty of tips and help on using the DMM) plus there are plenty of people on this forum who will lend you a hand you just have to ask.

i googled it none of them helped with what i dont understand i cant figure out the setting on the knobs like what each turn means. I know ohms but thats it

the one youre concerned with for this, is a "V~" for AC voltage, it might be labeled different but it should be like that. just check the directions for testing AC voltage. and then the equation is the square root of the watts you want to push into the ohm load. so Im guessing you have a D4 wired to 2 ohms.

now say you want to give it 1000 watts. 2 ohms times 1000 watts is 2000, sqrt of that is 44.72.

so set all your bast boosts to zero and any eqs flat, sub out all the way up on the HU, remote bass knob if any all the way up, HU volume around 3/4 and then play a 50Hz test tone and turn the gain til the DMM (measuring the speaker out at the amp) reads 44.72 and then theres 1000 watts into 2 ohms.

edit* oh yeah, and play 50 cent wanksta and tell me if it also sounds weird. Ive listened to that song on like 6 systems and I never like teh way the bass hits. it always seems like the gain needs to be turned down just for that song.

We still need more information on this "sounds weird" and "should hit differently." Is the tonality just off, does it make any scratching/ticking noises, does it sound flat or make a dull sound when it plays a note? Are you comparing the sound of this sub to a previous one? If so, which one? How do they sound differently?

Ok thank you so now i know which one to turn it to but which number under that V~? and heres an example shoulder lean by young dro that whole song used hit hard on my cvr 12s i used to have and on my L7 15 the beginning doesnt sound deep. Like flat i syppose. Ill try wangsta i new a system a while back that that song sounded good on it was two type e 12s. Btw i have a d2 wired to 1 ohm being pushed by a kx1200.1

alright, I was guessing you had a D4 cuz it seems alot of mainstream stuff like kicker/kenwood/pioneer/etc. their amps are usually 2 ohm stable.

anyways, with the DMM, ive always thought you turn the knob to the first number on the list thats higher than what you think you are going to measure. like on the DC voltage side, measuring my battery, which I assume would be around 11-13, and I have selection choices of 200m/2000m/20/200/1000. Ill choose 20. for AC voltage I got a choice of 200 or 750, so I set it to the 200 since Im only looking for around 35V.

so you take whatever power you wanna give the sub, say 1200 watts, multiply it by 1 (ohm load of sub) and take the sqrt of 1200, 34.65V is what youre after.

oh and wanksta that i listened to on mine at least, it was dl'ed but the other one i heard im not sure, they probabaly dl'd it also, but I downloaded it with I think 3 albums from the same uploader(torrent) and all the rest sound good, so I have no reason to believe they did something fishy to that recording.

Ok thanks for the detailed instructions ill try it today if i get the vhance. The one i heard was the real cd but idk how big of a difference that makes. And kickers new stuff the zx series is 2 ohm stable but the kx series the one before zx was 1 ohm stable and were better built in my opinion. I wouldnt put kenwood pioneer and kicker in the same category though.

not saying kenwood or pioneer make better even similar quality amps, its just that most of the big names that lots of people have, alot of the amps are 2 ohm stable. I dont remember exactly what line/lines of kicker amps did this, but ive heard the bass vibrating the amp can cause the settings to change and people put tape over the knobs to stop them from turning, might wanna make sure it wasnt the kx series you got, otherwise your correctly set gain wont be correctly set for very long.

I do have the kx series why?

Ok i understand ill tape them down just in case what do you think i should set my x over knob too? It goes between 50 and 200

??? how low do your speakers go?

I would have to check again but I think I have my LPF set at 80 and the HPF on the deck at 80, maybe 63 but I dont remember, I still play with them alot to see what I think sounds best.

Set your amps' Low Pass to 100Hz/80Hz or lower to what your preference is. Start at half way and work your way down, half way should be around 125Hz.

Ok thanks for all your help i messed with some settings its not as loud as before but it sounds good. I turned the bass boost off and turned all the setting on my head unit up.

Make sure you your Bass Boost/Extend = OFF and Loud/Loudness = Off on your headunit, glad everything came together.

Yeah I usually start with my grounds first so if you dont finish at least your ground wire will be bigger than your positive wire running from battery to alternator.

My amp has 4 gauge power and ground terminals would it be bad to trim the wire or should i just buy power and ground distribution blocks?
