18" BL Box Volume question...

Recommended Posts

Recently I built a box that is 47 x 22 x 22 with the port slot it all comes out to about 9.3 cubes, i was wondering if any of the gurus could tell me if that entirely too much volume for 1 18" bl daily driver?

It is outside of the recommended 5-8 cubic feet. It will reduce power handling, so be sure to be aware of that.

If you want to get it down to 8 cubes, put some bracing inside to take up some space. You should probably do that anyways.

thanks for your reply.

the problem is that here on the forums in the fi technical>bl box enclosure thread it states

BL 18 – Ported box we recommend using 5-10 cubic feet @ 30-37Hz tuning, you can tune a little higher if you wish but we recommend keeping it close to 32hz for a daily driver. Again the same 12-16 square inches of volume applies per cubic foot of volume.

----------------

So that is the information i used when i was designing the box. And that is also the box that i ended up building :(. Later while on the website looking at the products again, i noticed it mentioned 5-8 cubes. so now im confused and starting to get slightly saddened that i build the humongous box that may not even be good for my sub....

PS. How much bracing do you think i can add to take up space? and what type of material?

EDIT: Well i think i have a solution to this dilemma, since the box is already put together and rock solid... im thinking i can shorten the entire length from 47 to 40, which brings the volume down to 7.5 cubes and makes me happier .... just gotta butcher the box

The box cannot hurt your sub in any way. The only difference is how it will sound and the power you can apply to it. A larger box will be more efficient, play lower, and have a more even frequency response.

If you want to chop the enclosure off a bit that's fine, just realize that you'll have to recalculate and adjust the port length needed to keep the tuning the same. But since you already have that box built, why not at least try it out first to see if you like it?

thank you for clarifying that for me, i think i will try it out first and see if i like it. :) :) :) i was just thinking that it might hurt the woofer for some reason.

how much power do you plan putting on it? lol i remember when I build my box for an old system of mine, one 15" Q, 4.8cubes after displacement. while waiting on the 15 q to come in, i threw in a total mobile 12" i bought just as a temp. absolutely slammed in the enclosure even though box was way overkill for it.

so the point is....the box should work great, especially if you want to bang the lows, larger box is great, just decreases power handling, lotta people put 2kws on a BL, would have to be very careful trying to do that with that enclosure. what amp do you plan on using with it?

i have a kicker 1200.1 that will be wired down to 1 ohm

... woofer will be here tomorrow, and i was just thinking about mounting the woofer about 8 inches from the end, to see how the box soounds and if i dont like it i will chop off about 7inches of the same end to make the box about 7.5 cubes. ill have to retune the port just a bit cuz with the removal of about 7 inches will bring the tune to 35~ herts somewhere around there. i wanna keep it at 32~
