alright guys, i'll be heading off to college in the fall and i need to get a new computer, so im looking for your suggestions

i'm looking for a laptop, i dont really care if its uber lightweight since i most likely wont be carrying it around to classes but i do want to be able to take it home during breaks

needs to be fast, i HATE slow computers

a good sized HDD would be nice

wi-fi ready and all that good stuff

CD/DVD player/burner... can you get DVD burners in laptops? if not, not a biggie

a good screen, i do like to mess around with photoshop

and i think thats it, so let me hear your ideas

TIA

Toshiba Satellite or Dell Latitude. I've also heard that Averatec makes decent stuff, and they pretty cheap a well.

I love my new Gateway. HUGE widescreen. 1.25" thick. It is pretty heavy, but. . .

2.8 P4, 512DDR, 40gig HD, CDRW-DVD rom, built-in wireless. yadda yadda.

Battery doesn't last too long though. I can get 3 hours just surfing the net or something else, but once I start multitasking and listening to music, it sucks the juice. It does charge rather quickly though, and has every in/output you could think of. And I only paid $500 for it.

Toshiba's are great... but expensive

Gateways are very good too...much less

Dell=poo, you can only get parts from dell which makes it a pain.

Go here www.compusa.com

PM me if there is anything that you like ;)

dells are good if u dont plan to upgrade and are on a budget. however, on the bigger models the fan is loud, cant be taken to class IMO.

(honestly, theres no point to taking a laptop to class other than games)

in december i bought my dell for $1k

3.2 p4 w/ ht

512 ddr

40gig hd

cdrw/dvd

wifi

15.2" sxga screen (1400x1050)

blah blah blah

downside: its like 9lbs, fan's too loud, battery life is about 3 hours with normal usage (i bought 2 batteries anyways)

and u can get a dvdr drive on a laptop if u wanted.

some sites let u put whatever you want in your laptop and they build it for you.

newegg.com is one of the more popular sites to buy this stuff.

Do this, buy a mother board and put everything in it, no case or anything, just watch out with the CPU fan, it has ripped my finger and made me bleed 3 times already, i have scars. Take the mtherboard anywere with the box it came with, built that is, and just plug in a monitor to it, and thats it, you have youself a motherboard comp.

I couldn't find any information online about those Acer notebooks. I'm guessing there are replacement/upgrade parts available for them, but do you truly build and assemble everything ??

alright, time to bring this back

anyone see anything wrong with this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16834115179 ?

Spec wise that is a good machine. I just hope you are not going to pay that much ;)

Here is basically the same machine spec wise(except the toshiba has 1g ram :D), but its a toshiba and $400 cheaper...
