Icon bit the dust?

So i think the Icon may have run its course.

Driving home a few weeks ago the sub just started making a weird noise. Every time the bass hits the sub kind of cuts out and makes a pretty harsh noise.

So I finally had time to attempt to diagnose the problem. Took the sub out and inspected it and everything looked good though. No tinsels snapped, didnt appear to be a coil problem, and the sub moved in and out just fine(no coil rub). The sub looked practically brand new.

Reinstalled the wiring and turned it back on and the problem still persists.

Unfortunately, I didnt have a DMM to check the impedance on the coils so that will be next on the list.

Anyone ever heard of a similar issue?

Looks like Fi will be getting a call for a recone soon. This is a great excuse to finally throw the 18" Xcons in though. Shame theyre 250 miles away.

How were your gains set? We have not had an Icon fail on a properly installed and set SAE or SAZ-1000D. If the sub is cutting out, that sounds more like something in terms of the amplifiers current, and if it making some strange noise I wonder about the signal, or if it being over driven, or there is a leak. Nick may say it more smoothly then I can, but the speaker will only do what it is told, so it should only make the noises or sounds it is told to, and will cut out if the signal cuts out. I would check all connections, for power, ground, and RCA, along with settings on both the HU and amplifier. We just got an email from an Xcon customer that said something very similar and he thought it was the sub, when it was the amplifier connections.

I rewired the sub but I could check the rcas as well. It's weird bc it was hooked up for over a year with no problems. I thought it might have been a loose wire but when I checked I didn't see anything. I'll pull out the head unit soon as well. Just gotta troubleshoot it I guess.

Try Taking Your Subs And Hooking Them Up To One Of Your Friends Amp.

See If That Still Persist

Im certain it's not the amp.

However, I will try the sub out on my friends amp to ensure its not the sub. The more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards wiring/connections.

Just take your time, and work form the source to the speakers, and cancel out one thing at a time.

Just to let you know I had this same where the bass would cut in and out when it would hit hard, so I took my system apart and found out that the ground wire for my equalizer was loose and keep popping in and out of the terminal on the EQ. I rewired and connected to where it couldnt happen again, this fixed all my problems so hopefully it is a wiring/connection problem. Good Luck

Update:

Hooked the sub up to my buddies car and same result. Sub's toast. Looks like a recone will be an order. I can post some pics if anyone wants to see them, but the sub looks damn near brand new.

All I can think is that it might be coil rub.
