wiring 12v cpu fans in a car

Is it possible to wire in multiple computer case ball bearing fans in my car? Is it a matter of taking the black wire and grounding it, but the red power wire, can i just wire it to my distribution block? How will i deal with the voltage?

Thinking about mounting amps in a long thin enclosure with plexiglass top and have the fans suck in air on the right side and have the fans suck out air on the right side for ventilation. Maybe ill throw in some neon lights to make it look good.

Is this just a pipe dream or can it be done? Any help would be appreciated.

It can be done but you will either have to run a relay or a new wire with a switch back to the fans.

If it were 1 fan you could just run if off the remote lead but it seems likw what you want to do is a bit mush for just that littlw wire

i would need to run 4-6 fans and some neon tubes, also i would need to be able to turn this contraption on and off by a switch. im an electrical newbie. what is a relay?

Run the fans on one side only. Many people make the mistake of running a push-pull configuration. This is not very efficient for cooling. A fan will push and pull on it's own, it doesn't need any help and making a push-pull configuration will only create negative air pressure which will essentially do nothing to remove heat. Do you even NEED the fans? THe introduction of more components will promote noise and take up precious voltage. Don't use them unless the application absolutely calls for them.

Yes, if enclosing the amps, I would suggest a mechanical form of cooling. I live in South Bend, so I know just what you're talking about with the heat. Humidity is a bi tch too! Anyways, Depending on how you are doing the install, as long as you have enough air movement, you'll only need the fans on one side. Well, either way you only need them on 1 side, but what I'm saying is, make sure you are getting sufficient air movement. If not, you need to add more fans, larger fans or different speeds and/or blade pitches and count.

The ideal situation would be a vertical mount with the fans at the bottom and blowing the air out the top. Hot air rises, so use that to your advantage with the fans drawing the cooler, denser air from below.

A standard Bosch-type relay will allow you to run more current off the head unit's remote line than you would normally (around 300-400mA, not much for powering fans).

You need a relay, otherwise the excess current draw will toast the HU's circuitry for the REM line.

IIRC, you shouldn't worry about reverse wiring them, I've done that before- makes the fan blades spin backwards. =p

Actually he should worry about reversing the polarity. That is unless he wants the fans to pull not push.
