Best use of ~4cu and 1200 watts?

Recommended Posts

My ass has been asking this on just about EVERY forum, but because I'm an indecisive idiot, I'm gonna ask here. :ehh:

Okay so I've got a Honda Fit hatch, looking to put the ol' audio in. I'm pretty much set on everything but the subwoofer.

Comps: Alpine Type-X Refs, 6.5

Comp amp: Profile AP600 (got it for $55!)

HU: Clarion DXZ785USB

Sub amp: JBL bp1200.1 (spent $100 on this one)

Now I just gotta figure out what to put in the ol' hatch. I've got about 1300 watts to work with at 2ohm, 1400 at 1ohm. I can fit a box about 38x17x17, so somewhere in the area of 4.2cu if I push my limits and have a 3" wide slot, aiming to tune it low-ish, around 32Hz.

Like to snag a single 15 due to the obvious power issues, plus hey it's cheaper to get a 15 than 2 12's, as well as I think it'd be easier to throw one sub into my space than try to squeeze two in there. I could be wrong, though.

Budget-wise I'd really like to stick under $300 unless there's something that'll be a little over that that I just can't pass up for whatever reason. If that's the case, I'll look into it, but preferably under $300. Fortunately due to saving insane money on the two amps I can spring a little more on what they're hooked up to (hence the Type X refs).

I don't listen to anything complex, just your standard bass-heavy techno and rap music, but while I want to get loud I'm not doing SPL comps and I'd like it to sound good along the way. SPL is not my sole focus, otherwise I'd get another L7.

On my short list are a DD 2515, a Mach5 IXL, Soundstream T5, Kicker CVX (I know, but I'm a Kicker boy at heart), and as the waaaaaay outside possibility is the Incriminator Death Row. Mostly because I'm a sucker for clever marketing.

So what say you guys? I like this forum, seems like a lot of knowledgable people, figured I'd throw this one out here.

i got the ixl 15.2.2 awesome sub for sound quality it's not a spl sub at all. i think i would compare it to subs that are rated at about 84-85 db 1w/1m. do not let those number fool you it bumps hard because of the 22mm of x max. with the others in the lineup i do not think those sub even come close to the crystal clear bass that sub putout. i got it attached to a fosgate t600-2 wired down to four ohm and it bumps hard enough with that small of a amp. with the amp you got you could wire it series parallel at 2 ohm and rock two . i have had cvr's and they no way compare to the sq of a ixl.

No space for two IXL's, I don't think. It's a Fit, the hatch ain't that big, and now we'd be talking $460 for subs and I'm not sure I'd be comfortable droppin' THAT much on them. Something to think about though.

so many other choices for that kinda money. ever think about an x-con or i-con

Icon's on the list, but I don't think I have nearly enough power to throw at an XCON. That's really pushing my budget, but if it's a good enough sub I'll go for it.

1200-1400w is a little much for an i-con but for an x-con it will work wonderful. allow you a little more thermal capability while giving you a good deal more output. Dont get me wrong you can turn down the gain on the amp and run the i-con which i think is an amazing sub as well.

Really? Looks like I had it backwards. That price tag's starting to push it, but it looks like my initial goal of keeping things around $200 was foolish from the get-go, so we'll see. :drink40:

Its always hard to put a budget on car audio. If its really gonna be hard there is always the possibility to use a pair of d-con 12s too.

My MAIN concerns are space and power. I'm not working with an SUV that has a big space in the back, and I'm not getting a second amp, but if there's a pair of subs that work in smaller enclosures for ~600RMS I could do that, but outside of maybe a pair of Lethal Injection 12s sealed or 10s ported I'm not sure what would be the best use of the amp and the space. For a pair of subs I might be willing to spend more money, but again it'd have to be for a good reason.

Save some more money and go buy only one Xcon 12. Make a good ported box and you good to go !!!

You already have a very good amp for it5$100 dam...!!!)

If you want it now you can buy an Icon; you will be Very happy with it!

Forgive me for being repetitive, but I'd be underpowering the XCON by a good 350 watts if not more (the JBL supposedly does nearly 1400 at 1ohm). That won't be a problem? That's why I was figuring the ICON, it's rated at 1000RMS so wiring the thing at 2ohms means I'd be doing about 200 over, and I figured that'd be the better option.

If not, hey. XCON 12? Interesting.

EDIT: Just looked up the box size. Holy hell these things work in small enclosures. I'm thinking 2.25cu tuned to 31Hz in that area? Think that'd outperform most of the 15s I was looking at or not?

I've listen to only one 15" Xcon in a FisherCustom design ported box (3.5 ft" @ 32 Hz), it was powering by a 1200watts rms amp. OMG !!!

It's unbelievable, insane!!!!!!!!!!! That is really a Groundpounder!!!

It is way louder than my 15" Icon with 1000 watts rms (Sundown saz1000D) on it.

I am not selling any Xcon but you will not be disapointed with a beast like that. Take the dual 2 ohms to wire it at 1 ohm if you want all the power from your amp.

FYI : my next purchase is the 12" Xcon, and it will be powered by my 1000 watts amp!!!fing34.gif

I hadn't even considered the XCON. I figured it would need way more power than I had to give it. I'm liking what I'm finding on YouTube though.

But again holy hell that's pricey. Gonna be a while longer before I pick it up. Still gotta get my comps and HU, after all.

LOL, thanks about the av. Got it from here:

Subs don't need full RMS power, there's no such thing as "underpowering."

Might also try and find a used Stereo Integrity Mag v.3.

Definitely agree, no such thing as underpowering.

Do you still have your L7? If so, what didn't you like about it. I have heard L7 installations that are rather musical, but that is VERY box dependent.

Do you remember not liking something about it?

Not particularly. It wasn't the most musical, but then I wasn't aiming to win SQ competitions. I liked it a lot, actually.

But since I'm starting from scratch I feel like trying some new stuff, y'know? Besides, I don't think the newest Kicker line sounds as good as the old. Since the brand hit mainstream and started being sold in Best Buy and Circuit City it's like the quality dropped something major.

I don't agree on the quality statement. They are one of a couple mainstream brands IMO that still do what they promise to do. Either way tons of other options to buy, but the reason I asked is that I'd bet the "musical" promise was more box related than the L7's fault.

Totally agree !

I've heared some S15L7 (2006's and 2008's) in diffferent enclosures : 2ft3, 4ft3, 6ft3 all sealed : the bigger, the better!!

I tried a ported enclosure, but it was too small to sound good.

One thing : it was always loud, heavy bass, for rap and r&b.

But musically it can't compare to an Icon 15 : it's like day and night!

That's definitely possible. My L7 was in a custom box, the stuff I've heard since was pre-fab.

LOL, you guys are making me want to get another one like old times. All I really plan on throwing at it is rap/bass/r&b, anyway.

Gah, not only that but you're making me want to see if I can get my L7 working again.
