advice on some serious bs?

Recommended Posts

okay so i live in the northern illinois region and i was driving south into rockford illinois to take my friend to visit her boyfriend, who is in jail. so as im driving us to the jail, a cop shows up behind me, so i kill my system. cherries go on, and i get pulled over. so cop comes up to my window and asks me if its me with the loud music and i lie, and tell him no. and he goes, "pop your trunk". so i tell him no, u have no probable cause. and then the cop says yes i do, i heard it coming from your direction. so thats when i roll into, "o, well low frequency sound is omnidirectional, so actually you cant tell which direction its coming from." so then he gets all pissed and shit cuz im correcting him or whatever, and he says, i used to compete, i know my shit, look u can either give me your keys or i can take them. so i figured id give him the keys. so he pops my trunk and sees all my shit and knows its me. guess what? turns out its pucking MANDATORY to impound any vehicle in the city of rockford that violates the sound ordinance!!!! i got my pucking car towed away, which i have to go get tomorrow, which costs 150 bucks, PLUS i have to go to court and pay a MINIMUM fine of 150 dollars. so thats my story, so what im asking now, is if anybody has taken something like this to court and actually won? can it be done? or should i just let it go and admit that i got beat by the cop? or should i take it to court and use the whole low frequency sound being omnidirectional thing and hope the judge says the cop was in the wrong? give me some input. i have no idea what to do...

EDIT: i dont know if omnidirectional was the right word. i meant whatever the word is that means non directional.

i dont know if its worth the time going to court ... they look at you as an offender no matter what you do ... the judge usually always sides with the cop ... you have a valid point that low frequencies are omnidirectional but i do not know if that will hold up in a court of law ... you might actually confuse some people in the process

Get serious. You broke the law, you pay. Plus bass isn't omnidirectional out in the open like that. Are you going to tell me that you haven't been outside, heard a system coming, and not know exactly where it's coming from? Plus plus, you should never try to outwit a cop. Generally they get pissed at you for trying and hammer you.

bass is always omnidirectional. there is no exception to that. and yes, like normal people, there has been plenty of times that i hear a loud system, and look into a crowd of cars and have a difficult time telling which one it is. hmm... maybe im just weird? the only way u can tell where its coming from, is when the volume gradually increases as it gets closer, peaks in volume, and then gradually decreases as it gets farther away. other than that, bass has been and will always be dubbed omnidirectional.

x2 - i didnt feel like going into detail but if the cop was close they definately can tell ... it is easy to tell where the low frequencies are coming from esp if u r rattling around =)

It makes it very hard to read your posts when you don't capitalize the first letter of the sentence.

Pretty much just called out all of us on that one. I'm not used to typing correctly on forums.

Bass is omnidirectional to a certain frequency which to every human is different. Personally I can EASILY localize 50hz so if you are playing your subs higher than that you are wrong.

On top of that you did break the law by being an ass. NO ONE wants to hear your crap music so don't make them. Personally I think you should be fined more as maybe it would stop this sort of crap from happening.

Towing your a car away for playing loud music is not protecting anyone on the road, they just want money. a simple ticket should be the only thing. you can drag race and not get towed and thats pretty dangerous to other drivers on the road.

I have to agree with the fact that subs in your trunk garuntees a ticket, but you can at least call him a traitor. but wait. What sub-lover would give another bumper a ticket? bull dude, bull. He's just bustin your nuts. I say, pay the ticket, crank it in the parking lot, and haul ass outta there.

I have subwoofers in my trunk and I'm not paying a damn ticked just for having them. Were you playing it loud in a city? Or were you driving in the country?

Well , I have to dissagree !

frequencies shift as you are moving away or towards something ,

in short :

to the person standig/sitting stil the sound shifts .you produce higher frequencies when you drive towards them as the sound is compressed and lower as the soundwaves are elongated as you move away from him .

same goes for SPL ,the closer the person is to you it louder it wil be.

this way even bass frequencies can be detected easily from which direction they come from .

so low frequency waves themselves are omnidirectional you in your car are NOT

The phase will change yes, but frequency no.

OP: You were being loud, breaking the law (whether you agree with it or not), was mouthing off to the cop (never a good idea), and were most likely being an ass. I don't feel sorry for you.

Also, if you type a little more legibility it would make everyone elses life easier if they care to try to read your posts. It may just be the internet but you never know if it is going to come back and bite you in the ass.

You don't have to type in perfect English at all, just a little bit of common punctuation and care goes a long ways.

You are sort of right. The Doppler effect will indeed change the pitch, but that has NOTHING to do with whether or not the waves are omnidirectional. Just that they change pitch based on a different reference point.

And I don't understand the second half of your comment as the conclusion is also unrelated to the facts. You are correct that the closer you are to a sound source the louder it will be, but again that has NOTHING to do with directionality of sound.

Either way it is a fact that human perception of really low bass is indeed without direction, as it approaches some threshold though that changes. For some that threshold is lower than others. Of course the other thing you are forgetting about is that the low frequency energy will energize rattles, buzzes and other noises that are super easy to locate. Bottom line is that it is really, really easy to locate the car with the bass and the OP's comment to the cop wasn't right and I am sure it probably netted him the ticket. Instead of copping an attitude perhaps an apology and some politeness might have gotten you off. Either way, sounds like it was deserved.

lol my crap music? u dont know me or the music i listen to, nor the song i was listening to when i was pulled over. and i feel bad for a person that thinks 300 dollars is too small of a fine for playing music on an urban road thats already loud as hell as it is. just to let u know, not all of us make 100k a year to pay big fines and drive a BMW M5. in fact, some of us are 18 years old and unemployed, so 300 dollars can be a lot of money to some people. and maybe the 50hz u claim u can hear is just a poorly insulated trunk rattling, not the bass itself. and i was never an ass to the cop. just because i denied something i did doesnt mean i was being an ass.

in fact, you guys can just close the thread. i never thought just asking if there was any way i could make up some bs to avoid a 300 dollar fine would bring such negative replies. its too bad i have to get negative feedback instead of people just simply answering my questions.

The only reason people are being negative is because your coming off like a punk.

I have to agree with them but I have to agree with you at the same time.

If it was a old country road or something in the afternoon its not like it would have mattered, but going around neighborhoods at 2 in the morning bumping is a different story.

I don't know why you would lie to a cop in the first place he must have had a good enough reason to stop you.

He is right you know, most people don't want to hear it. I used to do the same thing, ride around blaring music and didn't care what people thought.

When I lost my last truck to impound, due to riding around with the music turned up, I realized how annoying it really is to hear a little hum/bump driving next to me. i don't really want to hear it most the time.

And since then, I 98% of the time have my windows up while I listen to music. So most people can't hear it.

And if you have no job, you would think you would try to avoid getting tickets at all costs.

so 300 dollars can be a lot of money to some people.

Then you should learn to go by the rules so you don't have to pay for your mistakes.

Acting humble around cops is going to get you a long way. I know it got me out of trouble 2 times...
