FI IB3 no cu. feet for ported?????

Recommended Posts

hey guys on Fi's site I was lookin at their 12 inch IB3's and its not showing any cubic feet spec's for a ported box...... why not? I was thinkin about gettin those instead of the SSD's because they call for a lower rms and the xmax is more..... and they're a lil cheaper too.

The Recommended volume is:

Ok, sorry, it was a dumb joke :suicide-santa:

Do you know what IB means...?

IB = Infinite Baffle. Meaning the "enclosure" can be infinite in size as long as the front waves are isolated from the rear waves. Those drivers are more for home audio where the drivers are mounted in a wall and the rear waves vent into another room. :)

ooo so i should prob just go with the SSDs instead of the IB3's?

For car audio, yes. :)

I hate how i get caught up looking at xmax and rms and judging woofers. :(

Never judge a book by it's cover

Never judge a woofer by its Xmax

why cant you judge a woofer by its xmax? i thought the farther out the cone came the higher spl the woofer would produce? idk im just a nooob but very interested tho. anyone got an answer?

Because it's one small parameter of the subwoofer, it doesn't really matter when picking a woofer.

Look at Digital Designs, the loudest single subwoofer in the world doesn't have a gigillion x-max, it's very small actually. X-max does not equal loud.

I bet their subs wouldn't get very loud sealed though.

Yeah buddy I doubt they would. OH maybe because sealed enclosures aren't made to be loud.

Well that makes me look smart. I shoulda said that xmax is not that important when the driver is ported and going for spl but more xmax in a sealed application would help or better yet i should just zip tie my fingers and quit typing before i make i make myself look even smarter.

Why do you personally think x-max is so important in a sealed enclosure application?

Well when its sealed the only sound made is coming from the cone and the more the cone moves the more sound it will make. If given two drivers one with 10 and the other 20 mm xmax wouldn't the 20 mm xmax get louder or would it just sound cleaner at higher volume levels. How wrong am i?

Much more than x-max is needed to compare anything.

Sealed they should be run at least at 28cuft each. Ported isn't recommended. IB description above should help.

Only somewhat. With everything else being equal that would hold true, but Xmax is far from the only parameter that correlates to output. On top of that even in a ported box "only sound made is coming from the cone" as well, it just happens to use both sides of the cone and a helmholtz like resonator to amplify the output. Either way it still all comes from the cone.
