Iraggi Alternator now spits out 26v ???WTF

Recommended Posts

When I installed my alt. it metered out at 14.9 at idle at 260amps.

Driving home today I noticed the battery light came on...

As soon as I pulled in the driveway I slapped a DMM to everything!

Now on all my points I read 26.5 to 27.3 volts....WTF!!!!!

I haven't touched a thing since I installed it.

What in the hell would make this alt decide it now want to spit out almost twice the voltage?

I'm yanking it out for now and putting in the stock alt...(I know it's good)

I've had issues with this thing since day one with the annoying whine it puts out of the housing.....

Besides the noise it worked excellent...UNTIL NOW!!

Any advise would be nice if anyone has any input..

Thanks ahead of time,

-Jason

Almost forgot to add,

It sat on a shelf for over a year, brand new never installed until

a few months ago....

I thought something was funny by the way my truck started idling rough....

hmm.. take ur multimeter and measure somethin else like a AA battery (1.5v) or a wall socket (110-125v) and make sure it's not the meter first.

Sounds like the regulator inside just died. Do NOT use it again if your meter comes back reading right.

Also, check the ground on the alternator and power cable. If one of these cables lost a good connection, it "may" also sky-rocket the voltage. Somewhat similar to removing the battery from the equation.

Well........

After trying 3 different meters...

Still +26 volts!!! :suicide-santa:

This wasn't even 6 months old yet!!!!

Uggggghhhh...... :badmood2:

I'm now yanking it out and replacing it with my stock alt....

No boom boom for me until I get this issue fixed.

How should I go about draining the batteries back to 12-13v at rest?

As they sit now they hover around 26v.....(not good I know)

I fear that I may have screwed the AGM's up with extra voltage...

I noticed the problem just today on the way home.

I didn't want to strand my truck on the highway due to thieves...

I had no choice but to drive it home..

Man this blows!!

Holy Jesus!

I'm surprised the batts are still alive!

Ok man, take the batts out and sit them down somewhere for a few hrs.

I know in my car, when the car is shut off, they stay at 13.8v for about 3hrs then they are back where they should be 13-13.1v.

They must rest for a while so dont use them until they return to normal.

Once they do return to normal, i would hook them back up in the vehicle with the stock alt and do current draw demands that match your stock alts capability so u can get some action out of those batts to see if they are still performing properly.

I would monitor their voltage drop during a demand of 100A or so and see what happens and make sure they still float around 13v or more.

PS - u still plan on comin down soon or u gonna wait until u get all this resolved?

Awww Geeez!

This is going to suck!

The secondary battery is kinda hard to get to.

I may just have to unhook it where she sits.

In a few hours I'll re-test them to see if the voltage drops any.

I'm surprised they didn't blow!

They never even swelled up or anything!...! LOL

I guess I caught it in time before any serious damage happened.

I might have to work this weekend....

I may try to come down to at least check out your ride.

I'll let you know by this Friday.

cool cool.

I dont know whats worse...

Charging at 28v....

or

Doin what Snoopdan did the other day and hooked up a battery bank that only needed a 30 min charge at 200A... somethin didnt quite set right and it RAN ALL NIGHT AT 200A! over 8hrs! While still in the vehicle!

Woke up to sulfur... Lucky nothin exploded on him! but sulfur was trapped in his ride for a while!

Well I just contacted Dominick from Iraggi,

He thinks it may be the regulator too...

He's surprised nothing blew up! LOL

It's being packed up and sent in for inspection...

This may take a while if repairs get pricey....(dang)

oh no... it usually cost around $285 to repair...

haha, i'm just messin with ya.

A new regulator is around $100 so if it's already external, then it shouldnt be too much.

yea thats definitely your regulator.

when your regulator goes bad it causes the volts to jump up really high.

Take the batteries out and set them on a concrete floor, that will drain them pretty quick.

Weird, really weird.........

I just went out to try the DMM Again....

It started out at 26.4 volts at idle,

then dropped to 12.4 in an instant

right in front of my eyes!!!!!

NOW.............

With everything off it's at 12.7 (front battery)

Start the truck and everything falls to 12.3,

I mean everything!

Increase the RPM to 2000,

still meters at 12.4......

So, I put the stock alt back in,

Now I have 14.0 at idle,

and 14.2 at 2000 RPM....

But with the stereo I have some good

voltage drop going on!!! LOL (stock sucks!)
