port vs Sub location

Recommended Posts

I am building a box for 2 XCON 18s and am trying to get as close to recommended specs as possible. box is going in a 99 Durango. i really want my subs facing forward so people can see what they are feeling! But not sure about where to place the port. SSA recommends 100 inches port area for each sub, so only real options on location is on the front, bottom; or facing the back hatch. i noticed a lot of street rides have the port facing the hatch for whatever reason. any input/suggestions will be greatly appreciated

Is this going to be a wall? Or almost a wall? having the subs face forward in an SUV in a non-wall situation is not ideal. It is like putting your home subwoofer in the middle of the room. If you've ever been in that situation, you know that's not ideal. Loading the sub in a corner of the room is much better. Same with a vehicle. If it's not a wall, you'll want to face the subs either back or up.

The box is going to take up the majority of space in the vehicle. maybe about 4 inches over the top and 3-4 inches on the sides where the windows are. Never really dealt with a wall before except in my brothers suburban, but his was done all on the sides with heavy expanding foam and i am not sure how to seal the wall to the vehicle without destroying the inside of the vehicle. and i am not paying 800 for a wall like that with no carpet and expanding foam.

You don't have to use expanding foam. You can just cut out extra baffles of wood to cover the space and attach them onto the sides and top of your enclosure to create more of the wall effect.

i built a wall with expanding foam and didnt tear my vehicle up.

I layered all my upholstery with fabric and taped it in place then filled it in.

my wall prob cost me around $500 ish after all bracing and adhesive\sealant products were used.
