SI 15 D2 review....

Recommended Posts

First off I want to start out by saying a big Thank You to Nick for the oppurtunity to demo the proto.

Now on to business. There is a defect (if you call it) in this proto. Nick can explain it better, and has in other threads. but the VC makes a weird noise at high excursions do to a bad chrome job and it leaking onto the pole, etc. But this will not be presant in the 15s when produced.

So as to performance of the driver, I was expecting a bit better than my current Mag but to my surprise it was way more than just a bit better. Taking the VC problem out of the equation, this driver is much louder than the previous Mag. On my alpine HU it reaches the loudness of my Mag at level 25 on just 20/21. This has to do with the new drivers being much more efficient. The build quality is top notch on this driver, as you can see in my previous pics posted. It is very evident how much SI put into their new motor and build of the driver.

As far as SQ goes: well remember this is SI we are talking about, SQ is in their blood. This new driver delivers some hell of SQ, taking on fast bass beats like a champ then rolling over and dropping the lows with the best of them. I listen to alot of jambands/rock and this is what I really look for in a sub. Compared to the previous version I would say this is a couple steps up in SQ as this driver has a faster response than the previous mag. One of the tracks I used to test out how well it rolls the bass notes is the first track off Speaker box's cd. and it hits every bass note like you want it to and really rolls the bass notes over from the low lows to the higher notes with ease. When I put in one of my favorite discs, Widespread Panic, and jamed out to a Space Wrangler the Mag really handled Schools' bass bombs with no problem. towards the end of the song he is slamming some mean, hard, fast bass notes then just completly drops the bomb and sends some of the lowest bass out possible and the mag absolutely rattles the hell out of the head, with the chest caving in. (if you are not familiar with Panic, you might not understand). Next came some KORN, and yet again I was impressed as hell how well it handles the kick drums in this, they really put it through the test.

I used the same box and amp I currently have in my sig to do the demoing, no adjustments needed that way I could get a real close comparison the my Mag. I can't believe how impressed I am with this new driver, even with the vc/pole problem it still pumps out some mean bass. The new Mag has an extremely promising future in many applications. My thoughts of possibly running dual mags has gone out the window as this sucker is quite a bit louder and more responsive. So I will be happy as hell just to get my hands on one of these whenever they are available.

To those that are left in the demo ring, enjoy this mag, don't get as worried as I did when you hear the noise from the vc/pole. It will not be presant in the mags when produced.

If I am leaving anything out, sorry, this is done in a hurry. But overall: WOW :D:slayer::woot:

I can not wait to get one of these in. If you are after SPL, this driver is for you, if you are after SQ/LSQ, this driver is for you. I can't wait to see what numbers this will put up. I see new SI records to be set.

Thanks again SI!!!!

And to add one more quick thing. Last night as I was leaving work, one of the guys that works for me wanted to check it out as I had been telling him about me getting the chance to demo it. Well we went out and first I showed it off to him and he was impressed with it before he even listened to it. While having the trunk popped I turned it on to let him see some "real excursion" and he immediatly said I have to get in and listen to this.

So we did, and his first response was "that's only 1 15?!! holy chit it sounds like two". Then he continued on to say one of the things he really noticed, apart from how damn loud it is, is the SQ and how clean and deep it is. Well I told him to pull his jeep over and get a comparison. And I am telling you now the Mag crushed his 2 MOMO's!!! he left drooling with his jaw dragging the ground asking me how they hell he can get some of these subs.

The chrome job on that particular motor was done locally. That motor was not supposed to go out, but I had it built to test the driver anyway. I knew it would not perform 100%, but I needed to actually hear the driver regardless of the defect. The bad chrome job is not only on the back plate, but it is also on the pole - hence the ticking issue that Cory is talking about. This problem will NOT be on the production drivers.

Thanks for the write up Cory! :) Now you see why we tossed the Aura out of our listening room for this puppy! :P

Not a problem. The Proto is off to Sarasota Florida for the next person in line. UPS said they will have it there Wed. I had them put it in a new box (box inside of a box) cause the box looked a little weak on the bottom.

Nick, I will email you the tracking number so you can pass it on if you'd like.
