alternator problem

Recommended Posts

y must everything not work for me =( .... i installed an excessive amperage alt about a month ago and it was not putting out anywhere its intended amount ... it would charge at only 14.1 and voltage drops would be incredible (into the 10s) ... no check charging system came on ... i decided to buy an iraggi to replace the ea alternator ... it still charges but only to 13.9 and now i am getting worse voltage drops and now the check charging system light comes on ... the pulley is smaller and also making a high pitch turning sound that i did not heard before in the ea ... i checked all my wires and it seems like everything is going where it is supposed to go ... the only thing i changed was that i rerouted the ground from the engine block to the top sanded part of the casing where the mounting bracket is bolted in

What amplifiers are you running? And how big are the alts (amps)? Do the alts have external voltage regulators?

i have a single alternator that is a 260 ... i have not even turned my system on high because i am afraid of the voltage drops ... i have a 4kw rockford and my 4 channel does like 100x4 at 4 ohm ... i do not have an external voltage regulator as dom said it would not be needed .... i think the problem is either the serpantine belt or the tensioner pully but i do not know if my check charging system light would go on

you need more than just an alternato.you need at LEAST 1 XS D3100 back there.u have crazy voltage drops because of this.once u install a batt back there, monitor charging voltage in between idle and 1000rpm for the next 24 hrs or so then get back too us if u still have a voltage charging issue.

but you dont understand ... it was not this bad with the stock alternator ... this one is charging at less volts and even when i put maybe 500 watts to it the thing drops to the 11s w engine revved

drive around a while until ur battery is fully charged then remeasure voltage.measure it at the alternator, battery, in line fuse, then amp's terminal.if its still low, turn car off, wait a few minutes then measure voltage on battery terminal.if its older style lead acid, should be 12.6.agm and/or sealed - 12.8-13.0vkeep having the battery charged until it reads this high.if it never gets that high, take batt to have it tested.

yes but why would the check charging system come on if i just swapped out the alt ... i had the bat checked at advanced and it said the battery was good

maybe not all the wires in the wire harness that connect to the alternator is making contact.contact iraggi and ask him what to check for when using a dmm to troubleshoot

alright thanks ... my friend put attached the harness and i asked him if it was in secure and he said it was ... u never know unless you do it yourself though ... im going to check that when i go home

Quit buying shitty alts. You have to pay to play and that's all there is to it. Charging the battery is not going to help. If the voltage is dropping as RPMs rise, then there is a problem with the unit.

Move your ground back to where it was and add another ground as well.

voltage is not dropping as rpms rise ... i understand i need to put another ground on the engine block but i dont have any wire at the moment ... i would think that it would be more important to have one closest to the alt.
