Ported box for 2 12" Orion XTRs?

Recommended Posts

I want them to pound, but I don't want them to take up all my trunk space, I want the box to be tuned around 32hz, so does anyone have any suggestions?

Hmm, are you sure those are 800 watts rms? The last ones I remember were rated 250 RMS I think (But those were like the v.2 and v.3, which were made back in '99 or something). However, depending on the version you got, you may be out of luck. Those XTRs were notorious for liking big boxes IIRC. Very efficient subs, but they gave up box size to get it. I'd basically go as big as you think you can afford. Luckily they don't need a ton of port area because they didn't have a lot of xmax. You could easily get by with two 4" aeroports, and with a big box they shouldn't be terribly long.

For example, a 5 cube box tuned to 32 hz with two 4" ports, each port only needs to be 10.25" long.

It says right on the magnet 800 watts RMS, XTR 12 DVC, I can't find the exact ones ANYWHERE.

Would ONE in a 2.5 cubic foot box be okay?

Hmm weird, but ok. You may want to email Orion to get their suggestions.

If one would be ok is up to you. I don't know if it's enough for what you are looking for or not.

Well I emailed Orion, and they just keep sending me PDFs that they have on their website, I've already gone through all of them, and none of them are the ones I have.

The ones I have look really old, and are in need of new dust caps and gaskets (or whatever you call them, they go around the area where you screw them in the box).

Here's a picture of one of them.

Those are the first series of the xtr line. When they first came out they had the orion xtr logo hand painted on them. The ones you have are silkscreened on and they are also 4ohm dvc's. Hear is one that we built for a couple of customers that realy slams.

5-cubes with (2)4" ports 8".75 long tuned to 33hz.

Wow and they were really 800 watts RMS? That would have been a huge sub back in that day! One of the first big boys. But it's strange that they scaled down the next versions so much?

Is that 5 cubes for a pair of 12s?

Yep. .. surprisingly they didn't sound to bad in smaller enclousers either. I'll see if i can find some of our old shop note folders with all of our spec's for them.

side note

I used to work for Better Sound Electronics in Johnstown Pa and we were a Orion/msxaudio/volfenhag dealer from 99-02 we sold alot of the xtr series 3s but they weren't like the first series and the xtr series 2.

I am fond of the Xtr feriflouid cooled dvc subs my self they handle alot of power for their time 800watts but those older surrounds didn't last to long.

Used to have a pair on a 275r and WOW those were the days. Lived at home no bills and dealer cost. . :fing34:

I owned 2 of these when they were new and ya they were pretty loud in small enclosures, 2.5 would be fine. they really did take a pounding, at the time most people around my way described them as being able to be literaly kicked and not miss a beat. I had them in a custom (and small esp. for the time) bandpass enclosure in the trunk of an '88 Pontiac Grand-Am w/ a ton of room left over, if ur familar w/ those cars they have pretty small trunks. GL with them, Im a fan of them, post a pic of the box when ur done if you would. I also might have the original paper work fromn the factory, if I do they are under tons of papers so may take a few days to find but I'll def. look for you.

I'm trying to decide exactly what I wanna do with them, I may do 5 cubes like jj1479 suggested, but I need something to power them with, my Rockford Fosgate BD1500.1 is invisible now. :WTFBubble:
