03 XXX 12 D2 Recone Kit Arrived Tuesday!

It was in a box smaller then the diamater of the recone kit, so the surround was all mashed up and slanted, most of it formed back to it's orignal shaping before it was glued down, but one small part is still lop sided which kinda sucks... also there is about a 2 1/2 - 3 inch long scratch on the surround on the inner part that i noticed right out of the box. the recone kit works 100%, no complaints mechanically! great job, but I expected a 'new' cosmetically and mechanically sound kit. the scratch does bug me, it is pretty long, looks like someone had long finger nails and just pushed in a bit and ran it around the inner of the surround.

anyways, im pleased with how it performs, but unpleased with cosmetic issues.

I would not hesitate to do business with Fi again! I'm sure the big ass scratch was overlooked... i doubt you guys would send out product looking like this :[ I will post pics as soon as i have access to a card reader.

thank you Scott / Nick for answering questions.

no apology or anything for the scratched surround? sad... fi just lost a customer over that :(

a simple apology woulda went a long way with me.. i wasn't asking for handouts or anything. no i didn't email scott or nick directly due to after i sent payment, they haven't replied to ANY of my emails i sent to them, yet they have replied to me on this forum. don't worry, im not gonna go mouth off about how horrible fi is or anything along those lines. i will simply never deal with fi / aa again. also the warped surround is a pretty annoying thing to have, when it is visibly deformed, not cool.

Fi is a small busy company they don't have time to check the forums everyday.

Best thing you can do is E-Mail them and wait. They are a SMALL company trying to put out a HUGE demand.

Give them a break man. ;)

Contrary to popular belief we do not sit on the internet/computer 24-7 365 at everybody's beck and call. You got the recone 4 days before you should have gotten it anyways.

Anyhow, Use that one as a Chinese hat..we'll send you another one since it is so unacceptable.

The surround isn't "Deformed" We've been shipping recones like that for the better part of 10 years. You just stretch the surround back over to where it is supposed to be. It is a foam/rubber compilation, it goes back to the shape that it was pressed into.

As far as the scratch..don't know how that got there, it wasn't there when it went into the box.

Please remember we do these recones as a service and as a 'thank you'. We do not have to fix other manufacturer's stuff...it'd be a lot easier to say No, you have to buy a Fi product....otherwise you'd be paying 300 dollars for that same recone.

Thanks,

Nick

Never assumed you were online 24/7

How can a scratch get there after you packed it and sealed it?

Out-of-box the scratch was there.

A thank you? I was under the impression it's a service you provide.. that's why it's promoted on your website and this forum as a service you provide to customers? 'thank you for your money' maybe :D

Looks like a quality control issue. I dont know yet but Fi has a pretty special buzz on the net these days. Its good to keep the customers happy! Positivity breeds profit. And as for the contact issue, that has to be nailed in the uhmm, u know nailed down. Its part of the business. Customer service. Perhaps hire a male secretary who knows about subs. Male cuz what lady is gonna know. I mean I barely know. And Im a MAN baby. Woah did I get off track.

Anyhow, good to know this is getting resolved.

Mike

I did not even notice you said you'd ship another one out.

Should I send out that shipping fee again?

I tried to pm Nick but it won't allow me to because you have it disabled or it says the group you're apart of doesn't allow pming..

"I just wanna clear the air, I was under the impression the kits were preassembled from our e-mail conversastions, no you never said they were, but it's what I gatherd from our convos. So sorry about the impatients, and it just scared me a bit that before purchase you and scott were speedy with replies through email, after payment I recieved 0 replies, so hopefully you can see where I was coming from. I now understand how busy you guys have been lately, working on new models, orders coming in left n right, i apologize for me jumping the gun.

Now onto the recone kit itself, the box was not tamperd with when i recieved it, opend it, and the scratch was there, out of box. shit happens man, i wasn't pissed off, just lettin it be known.

there is one other issue with the kit, i wasn't gonna bring it up in the thread because it was a little more serious imo. the surround, doesn't fit right on my basket, where hte mounting holes are thehead of the screws are actyually cutting intothe outer surround a bit, and my gasket would not fit anymore because this kits surround is wider(same reason the screws cut into it)... but yah i had to cut the whole top half of my gasket to be able to use it.."

No..you put it together wrong..or didn't know what you were doing.

We've been using the same surround tooling die for every single 12" speaker that goes out the door...there is no way that it 'does not fit' as they are all off of the same tooling that we use every day.

The edge of the surround is supposed to go flat around the basket...

Watch the video...again, you are jumping the gun pointing fingers :). Ask questions before you mess up..there is nothing wrong with asking questions.

Thanks.

Is there away you could pin a link in the sticky section of your youtube videos (repair and recone)? Maybe save a lot of confusion.

Nick i'll have pics to show the blame is not in my reconing job. Please stop trying to put blame in other places and accept it. Proof is coming.

Thank you for the second recone kit, it's more then I could of ever asked for, but unfortunetly it is also too wide on the surround.

I will have to make my own mounting holes in the basket when I recone it the second time due to the bump in the surround is wider then what was meant to be mounted to this basket.

On the + side of things I did recieve a bumped Fi dustcap! Which looks sexxy as hell might I add! :D

It's a XXX.

It uses the same 12 spoke basket..and the same surround profile...with the same surround landing ID and OD..with the same tooling.

Scott used to own RE and designed the thing ;)..why would we send out things that don't work?

That is how it is meant to be.

Now, your XXX might have came with a wonky Chinese gasket..which is a good possibility as to why it fits weird, that did happen years ago. There were runs of them that some fit better than others...as vendors were changed a few times through the runs of those subs.

Otherwise, the recone is what it is and is 'OEM equivalent'. Ask questions first...before pointing fingers. Watch the video. It is the exact same. Those dimensions on the basket have not changed in the past 15 years.

My recone job is solid, the surround IS wider then the sub orignally was (I still have the old guts I ripped out from the basket and compared) so you can keep saying it's not and keep saying it's 100% correct to my basket, but it isn't. There is no room from the mounting holes to where the roll on the surround begins for any kind of screw to mount the subwoofer to an enclosure without cutting into that beginning of the roll. Call me a liar and keep saying I'm to blame, pictures will do justice.

Because you are pushing it all the way out...it is not meant to be pushed all the way out. If you use the gasket to center everything it puts it into proper alignment..never an issue.

It is the same tooling...exactly the same. It has not changed. Same part number..same tooling dye..same compound.

Built thousands of subs with that exact same surround profile...it is not the surround, it is not the basket, it is not the tooling as they are all the same.

I am only online @ work and I don't carry my car audio equipment around with me to work. I will have pictures of everything up tommorow, currently reconed sub, the new recone kit, and the old guts I ripped out to compare the surround roll differance. Patients :D

Can I purchase a new gasket from you guys? This could be, and probably is my issue, makes sense. None of the video tut's or txt/pic tuts explained putting the gasket on to align the edge of the surround during a recone.

That's an example of when you do not use the gasket to align the surround on glue time? Pretty much exactly how my recone looks... and looked with the gasket overlapping... I'm ashamed. Mad at myself now, and sorry for how much of a prick I've been. Egg in my face, I apologize. I Appriciate your patients in dealing with me. Shipping to 98204 Everett, WA for a gasket?

Thanks again.

No...first pics is what it would look like if you did not put the gasket back on it and let it dry. (That's not glued together, it is just sitting there)

You put the glue on the spider landing and surround landing, you then drop the assembly down with the gauges in the middle of the coil, spin it so you are sure you have a good bond on the spider landing.

Then you take the gasket and put it around the surround/edge of basket and let it dry. This centers it where it needs to be.
