Thinking of getting some Q's

Recommended Posts

So I've been doing a lot of reading and looking around and now I'm kind of geared towards one or two Fi Q 12"s. If I go with two I was looking at the Audioque 2200D, but I haven't really looked for an amp if I only go with one, so I'm kind of set on two but I'm worried about it being too loud. What kind of electrical upgrades would I have to do for two of them?

Now I was thinking of building my box, I'm debating between ported or sealed, haven't really decided which one I want to go with yet. My max trunk space is 36" wide, 15" high. I can go kind of deep, can't remember the exact measurement right now but how deep would I have to go for a box with that width and height?

Does this seem good for a hatchback (2003 Hyundai Tiburon)? That's why I'm mainly worried about two 12's being too loud. should I go with two 10" subs?

I mainly listen to rock and some rap, should I go with a ported or sealed box?

I have a Pioneer DEH-P4900iB head unit.

Well, I just went and took pictures and measurements of the box space and everything so you guys can see what I'm talking about

Well, I've heard to 12" Q's in a ported back in an Escape(1000watts total)...and it's pretty loud. You'll probably be happier sealed. It's kind of a hard question to answer because of the subjectivity of loud.

Keep in mind, you don't have to run 1000watts to each sub. You could run 500 to each and still get some good results.

I just sold a single 12" Fi Q in a 2.05 @ 33 hz to my boy and he is only running 700-800 watts to it and it crunches..

Very clean sounding driver..

Most people around here think its a mult sub set up until we show them.

Would there be a noticeable difference between two 12's and a 15? I think I'd have room for two 15's sealed but probably not ported however I have heard sealed sounds more accurate and its easier to build so I think I'll go with sealed so that cuts out the BL. Is the AQ2200D a good match for two Q's?

I know, I was worried about two 12's being too loud and now I'm saying two 15's. I guess I really don't care how loud it is, I just don't have the room for BL's is my problem.

Its very hard for me to make decisions like this, it is quite annoying.

edit: What kind of electrical upgrades am I looking at for 2200RMS, could I get away with Big 3 and a Yellowtop up front and not have to have any crazy alt's or a batteries in the back?

According to my calculations if its double slant 15" towards the rear seat 17" towards the hatch lid thats 8.2 cubic feet I would just go with 1 18" SSD off around 600-800 watts Ported that should be plenty loud bigger than two twelves and cheaper than two twelves and shouldn't be dimming you're lights as much as 1200 watts.

I don't understand the slants your talking about??

I was thinking two 12" Q's that need .8-1.5 per sub, so a 15x15x15 Cube for each sub that gets 1.26 cubes after displacement for each sub. But having the boxes connected by the top and bottom piece running the full 36" across my trunk so theres not just like two boxes setting in my trunk. should leave between 6" in the middle that I would just put a board to cover up. Should I fill that spot with foam before I cover it up?

Could I have the subs pointed up so then the 36" board would be running across the front and back instead of top and bottom? Would it sound better with the subs faced up towards the glass instead of straight into the back of the hatch?

Personally, I think you would be happy with a single 12" Q ported..

With the money your going to spend on another Q you could just put that money towards a nice amp and some electrical upgrades.

I was quite suprized on how loud a single Q was in a trunk.

Do you know of any diagrams for a ported box for a 12 and 15 Q? Sealed is easy to think up, but I have no idea on how to design a ported box, I keep trying to mess with the calculator on RE but I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to ported.

edit: Don't know if it was clear, diagram for a single 12 Q and a diagram for a single 15 Q.

Decide what you are going with and someone could design you a box. ;)

lol, I kinda figured that was coming, I don't know if I have room for a ported 15 that's why I was kinda hoping for preliminary dimensions of some sort.

I looked at some stuff and by saving the money from only getting one sub I could get an SAZ-1000D (from what I've read this seems like a better made amp then the AQ1200D?) and still have a little extra money. With only a 1000W I shouldn't have to do any electrical upgrades right? Just a run of 1/0 to the AMP and 8 Gauge from amp to Sub?

Using your dimensions before you have enough room for 2 12's or a single 15, almost 2 15's but you'd be scraping the minimum requirements.

I would get the SAZ over the AQ, you should be fine with minimal electrical upgrades ie Big 3.

What do you got for door and rear deck speakers? I Say just go with a 15" fully loaded SSD off of like 500- 800 watts so you can get a smaller less power hungry amp in like a 4-5 cubic feet box ported and that should be plenty for the average person. I have 2 15" Q's running off 1200 watts rms in a box that is 8 cubes after the port and its loud enough where I don't have it turned all the way up all the time cause you can feel a little bit of pain in your ears. So I think 1 15" Fully loaded SSD should be plenty.

Barely smaller than 2 12's, cheaper than 2 12's, and if it gets burnt up you only have to replace one sub instead of two, or recone 1 sub instead of 2.

And you could get a amp for around $250 to power it, with the crappy economy these days loud for as cheap as possible I would imagine is most people's goals and going with less bigger subs will do the job cheaper than more smaller subs

you can always get a 15" Q sealed and if its not loud enough the only thing you would have to change is the box and you'd be substantially louder versus if u buy one 12 and want more than a 12 ported u have to buy another 12 or sell the 12 and get a 15 or whatever.... just getting a 15 is more versatile... you can start sealed and if thats enough stick with it, if not, switch to a ported box.

i have a ported 15" Q and LOVE it.

My tib came with the infinity system, it has 6 and 3/4 components in the front and 6 x 9's in the rear. I've had people tell me that my mids and highs sound good for stock compared to a lot of what they've heard.

I like Doctor Q's idea, just having to change the box, gonna have to throw that one around tomorrow while I'm not paying attention in class lol

I think a driver other than the Q will fit your needs better. Using an AQ amp with a Q :(

Ok, I have decided to only buy one sub, a FI Q 15, and a better amp, SAZ-1000D and go ported. Now my only dilemma is I still can't figure out the ported box calculator, so can someone help me out with a design?
