Subwoofer / Amp question (supern00b)

Recommended Posts

Hi, I have cheaper stuff than most of you guys wipe your butt with. Anyways, I have a 2x10" sub with Pioneer speakers that say they handle 50-120w RMS (I know I know, don't laugh) and a 2-channel Pioneer GM-3300t amp that claims the following:

Output Power (4 Ohm, <=1% THD) 60 Watts x 2

Output Power (4 Ohm Bridged, <=1% THD) 150 Watts x 1

Output Power (2 Ohm, <=1% THD) 75 Watts x 2

Now, since I am buying a pair of front component speakers, I wanted to hook them up to an amp. The question is whether or not I should use my current amp for the component speakers, or keep the cheapo amp with the sub and buy a new amp for the component speakers. BTW, the subwoofer enclosure is sealed as I listen to mostly rock / metal / hardcore stuff...

Any pointers would be really swell...

What is the voice coil configuration on the subs?

The subs are Pioneer TS-W251R 10" 4 Ohm... it says no dual voice coil, I'm not sure if that's what you're asking.... these are the specs:

Size 10 -inch

Impedance 4 ohms

Cone Material IMPP

Surround Material Urethane

Sealed Box Volume (cubic feet) 0.7 - 1.3

Ported Box Volume (cubic feet) 0.9 - 1.55

Port diameter (inches) 3

Port length (inches) 6

Free-Air No

Dual Voice Coil No

Sensitivity 90 dB at 1 volt

Frequency Response 20 - 4500 Hz

RMS Power Range (Watts) 50-120

Peak Power Handling (Watts) 600

I'm thinking if you don't want to spend too much money, just move that amp up front and then buy a new amp for the subs.

ya id run the cheap-o-amp on the fronts and get a new one for the subs, or sell off your system to a buddy and start over haha

if u already haven't purchased the components look into phoenix gold Rsd comp's if your on a budget.

since they are 4 ohm svc's run them to a 1 channel amp. this is a 2 ohm load and your looking for around 300 rms.

another option, but probably less viable, would be a 4 channel amp and bridge 2 channels to each sub...

whats your budget for amp?

skip on the 6x9s, no real need for them especially in a budget setup. use that money for better fronts or better amps.

this guy makes hellz more then rated, check this out(actual power)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ROCKFORD-FOSGATE-300W-...%3A2|240%3A1318

so if your looking to upgrade subs later u have more then enough power on tap to do it.

this is the amp im running right now, and the price is very nice at 115

kenwood excelon kac x10d

you might be able to snag a deal from someone on the forum aswell.

if u mean to spend any less then that there are other options, im just not to familiar with the various brands and dont want tell u what to buy without having experience with a product in some way

Cool, very helpful, I appreciate it greatly! You think I'd need 1200w out of the Kenwood amp or is that just for an upgrade path? That seems like it'd majorly rock my alternator, lol. :P

Another question, you have any advice on a wiring kit? Are most people doing 8 gauge?

You don't have to use all that the amplifier is capable of. If you only want it to put out 300 watts, you can set it so it will do so and it will hardly be a burden on your alternator.

Not garbage, not great. Better than that Kenwood that was listed earlier though even though it has less power.

Thanks M5. I have a feeling it'd be a decent match for my low/mid-end system. No point in dipping outside of my pricepoint I guess.
