SSD or Q 15 inch

Recommended Posts

I like for my lowest bass to be very strong. I'm not into the high/loud bass that you hear from street beaters. I'm very interested in the 2 Q 15's but since i have stock alt(2000 grand marquis) I doubt i go any higher than 1500 rms total for them. Which makes me think i'd waste them. Are the SS series subs as good with the low notes with that much power? I'm going sealed. I like the sound of subs in 4 cubes per and bigger. thx for any input..oh yeh, i also have the L7 on the list however my friends tell me the FI subs would destroy them

and your friend knows so much about FI how???

my guess is hes talking out of his ass.

1500 would be fine for those subs.. but they can take up werds of 1500 EACH.

the Q is a great sub.. nice and low.

i also enjoyed the BL's

I have a question and some other things on my mind about what you say...

If you are so obsessed about ultra low loud bass but are afraid of it's output potential due to your power limit you will use, then for one.. Why go sealed?

Ported designs are a LOT more efficient than sealed and can destroy a sealed box in low end efficiency as well if you listen to music that doesn't peak below 25hz all the time.

So what music do you listen to?

If rap or modern rock, it's very rare for these 2 genres to peak below 30hz so i must insist on why not going ported if this is your genre.

Also, it's my personal opinion that since Kicker wants their customers to tune their solobarics in the high 30s, 40s or even 50Hz range...

Why tune so high?

Fi subs may be a better choice for your typical low bass range as they are intended for that purpose.

actually i do prefer the music that dips below 25 HZ. And i'm just being stubborn about sealed. I know it may be dumb but im gonna use a sealed box regardless. and even yourself pointed out that a sealed would be best for that frequency of music. it's just my personal preference of how i like to listen to my music man. Ever heard of the CD bass from the krypt? what about the SS series subs. would the output be that much difference than the FI Q? I love the price of the SS 15. thx for your reply man. I am leaning toward the Q's and starting with that 1500 rms. then upgrading to 2000-2500

Nothing at all wrong with a sealed enclosure. The Q is more at home in sealed I believe then the SSD, but either will be a great choice. Also, 1500 watts is pretty much right at the upper most limit of what even the fully optioned Q can take. So no need to increase power after that.

thx a lot for the advice. i'm going to be running 2 of them so they 'll get around 600-750 each rms. My box that i'm gonna build is gonna be around 4 cubes per chamber before i calculate the speaker displacement which i dont totally understand how to calculate that part. not yet anyway.

Usually the manufacturer gives displacement to you. For most 15s, 0.15 cubes per sub is adequate.

i figured it out. i should have around 3.8 cubes per chamber when all is said and done for either a pair of SSD, Q, RE SE or L7 15's. decisions decisions

I have 2 15" Q's ported at 32Hz in 7cuft off of 2200wRMS... they get loud and low like a mother! If you want the deep bass ported is really the way to go bud. And my electrical is stock as well, I am even running a 300wRMS amp for my highs. the only electrical mod I have is an Optima RedTop/Big 3... have slight dimming at FULL TILT and I have a '95 Deville not too different from your sedan so you really shouldn't see a problem.

You can check out the video below, I'm playing "Mr. Jones" chopped and screwed and I'm sure the bass hits around 20-25Hz... look about halfway through the video it's ridiculously low...

Hope that helps!
