Deadener Coming to the Jeep

Recommended Posts

The purpose of deadening is not to increase your score, it may even hurt it. Panel resonances can add to your score if your vehicle happens to be tuned right.

I lost almost a full db after I deadened my civic. With the same system it was pretty much a full db down afterwards... I was able to get louder later but I used different equipment.....

made for a much quieter ride and not to mention it helped out the heating and cooling (you could heat that thing with a match :))..

I foamed the whole rear compartment, added stainless steel panels to the "skeleton" to hold the foam and did three layers of 80mil deadener everywhere... other than just one layer on the stainless... at 150+db nothing on that car rattled at all... other than the front wipers.. :)

Experience seems to vary greatly with deadening... hoping it does well for me in the Jeep, though!

I'm scared to deaden after the first time... :) If I do, I'll deaden before I do any testing that way I'll never know...

Not to mention, everyone was bummed when my car no-longer sounded like it was going to fall apart :) It hurt to be outside from the rattles.. :) sounded like it was WAY louder than 150's

my new civic hb is about the same.. :)

what i've heard now is that you should only deaden certain areas in your vehicle.. deadening some panels may help your score whereas deadening others might not..

only through testing you will know which is which..

Perhaps if you renamed deadening to killing panel mode resonances the application would be easier to envision.

Two 1500Ds.

Stereo Integrity BM 12s - 8 of them. They don't make that model anymore.

I am up 0.2 dB so far and I'm not done with the roof yet :) I am adding a little then metering... adding more... then metering.

Just using one NS 15 and one 3000D as my reference system... that way I don't have a ton of stuff in the way of getting around the Jeep.

Just for reference...

Started at 151.1 dB and I am at 151.3 dB now with the Single NS 15" D1 and the Single SAZ-3000D @ 1/2 ohm.

Half way into the front panel:

NO CHANGE - 151.3 dB

----------

I am hoping for 0.1 more finishing the front panel. I am just about done with a bulk pack though *laughs* So I need to order more before doing much more.

I had two more small rectangles of deadener left from my pack:

* Before

CIMG1972.JPG

* After, see on either side of the piece that was sticking out farther

GAIN - 151.5 dB

0.4 dB gain so far with a single bulk pack

So... I need to concentrate on the back I think. This is where my woofer fires, right at the ceiling in the back.

I remember us talking about when this day would come. Love to see the step by step testing with the termlab. Anyone who is interested in competition output should be paying attention to this topic. Keep up the good work Jacob.

now that doesn't coun't unless you put all the panels back in every time :)

did you test prior to removing all the interior?

Not with this exact woofer and amp setup.

Based on similar setups, though, it is not much different with the interior in.

What tone are you testing on? What box? Where in the truck is it? You know all the good stuff we should know too.

It's right here :

Jeep always peaks @ 50 Hz

3.5 cube ported box

Your peak freq may change after all is said and done.. Mine changed about 2hz after it was all done... mine was a little more excessive than what you're planning on though. :)

My peak did change already :

48 Hz - 150.7 dB

52 Hz - 151.9 dB

53 Hz - 152.0 dB

54 Hz - 151.9 dB

55 hz - 151.6 dB

Frequency is up 3 hz to 53 hz now. Counting the gan from frequency change I am now up 0.9 dB total.
