2 12 nightshades capability of getting louder options

Recommended Posts

currently i run 2 12s off 2 1500ds... i am am having issues with wheter to stick with the 12's or change baskets and softparts to 15's... but before i go that route i wanna know how loud can 2 12's get in an optimal enclosure to acheive a little more loudness and range from these subs. as of right they they are crazy loud!!!!! but you always wanna a little more to see what these beasts can do.

i've been talkin to pete about another box for my tweles and possibly 1 if i choose to recone them... we were working on a design that will have the subs drop as low as 15-20hz and still sound good all the way up to 90hz (daily beater) the box i have now is 4.4 cubes @ 35hz and really misses notes here and there and on some songs just dont sound right.

would it be a big diff in switching from 12s to 15s?

also if anyone can recall any builds similar to mine please chime in. thanks

Here's one of my daily setups. My truck is 1995 Chevy Blazer 4dr. The electrical consists of a 200a EA alt, MLA Module, Yellow Top under the hood, two Deka 9a31's in the back. The subs are original bone-stock Nightshades(from the blowout special), no cooling, short coil, old glue. Box wasn't built for these subs. After punching some numbers it's 3.87ft^3 @ 38hz w/ 61.88in^2 of port. Amp is a single SAZ-3000D.

The Setup

Subs wired to 1ohm, burped @ 50hz

Subs wired to 0.25ohm, NOT RECOMMENDED, burped @ 51hz

12's can get very loud. I ran two 12's off an old earthquake phd3 all year in 06 and was able to 50's everywhere I went. The loudest I got with the two 12 set up was about a 51.5. When done right almost anything can get loud. If you wanna save the money and time just play with different box styles and sizes.

Getting louder and having more range in the subs are polar opposites. You can only change your box to get one or the other. If you tune higher you'll get louder, but if you tune lower to get more notes, you'll lose SPL. If you lower your box size but don't increase power or tune, you'll lose SPL. Your only option here would be to create interchangeable ports, one for daily that's tuned lower and one for comps that's tuned to 45 or something.

So we'll start with what notes are you missing? The lows?

That is all very true. Sorry I think to much like a competitor a lot of times.

I have 2 12" American Bass VFL Extreme Subwoofers in a PWK Designs Compound Loading Bass Reflex Enclosure. They are powered by a Sundown SAZ3000D Amplifier. My electrical sucks right now, but I am doing almost 152 in the floorboard and 148.3 on the dash. I have no doubt if my electrical was better and my roof dampened, I could see 150+ on the dash and probably 154 in the floor. I am seriously thinking about getting 15's or getting 2 12" Sundown Audio Nightshades.

the notes i'm missing is the lower notes mostly, and of course some songs the high bass notes dont beat as well as the the rest of the notes.

the reason i am tossing back and forth about reconing to 15s is that i wanted pete to build me a box to pick up the lows well and also maintain to be flat from 20 to 80 hz, he was stating he would need about 4 cubes per, but isnt 6 cubes recommended for these ideal size? i love the way they sound now... no one in my area thinks that 2 12's can do so much...( im in kicker and pioneer country down here, other than josh the sundown rep in town... im one of the only ones that know sundown exist YET). just wish my box had more range.

in my opion i think it would be very hard to get an extremely flaat response like you are talking about with a stiff "loud" oriented woofer like the nightshade...

BAD NEWS.... i was driving over to the other side of town to visit some family and i had the subs on very low at thw time and through the 10-15 drive, the last 2-3 minutes playing them, someone yells they see smoke in the car... i look and at the most i thought it would is some of the glue melting because i have only been running them for about 3 weeks, so i pop the trunk and one of the woofers are on fire... i took the box out, waited for it to cool and a hole about an inch wide melted from the cone to the dustcap and the spider was burned as well, but the voice coil is fine as well as the other woofer... what would cause this....

I have a custom built box that is a little on the small side (2.5 cubes) that I used to run two RE MT 12" in. My best score was a 151.7 sealed on the dash with 2 Memphis 4K's with barely enough battery juice getting to them. I would like to try a pair of stock nightshades on a burp with my two 3000d's in the same box to see what would happen. Hmmmm.....Jacob?

the tinsels were fine... still silver in color and vc looking good as new... and why wouldnt it affect the other woofer? i had the system on for maybe 10-15 minutes just commuting to the other side of town.

For a fire to start something would need to be extremely hot - are you sure your coils are okay ?

coils are fine not burnt at all... just as the other is... the only things that are burnt are the cone, dustcap and the spider. did not effect the other sub at all, only been playin for 10 mins when it happened and i've played it longer than that before with no problems... just cant figure it out... i'll try to put up pics in a few days or i can send them to your email sundownz.

The coils can get extremely hot and still seem fine. Are you looking at the whole coil or just that you can see through the hole in the cone?

coils look good to me... is it possible for it to show damage only on the inside of the coil... because the outside is spotless... and jacob, it looks like i will be getting those 15 baskets and recones real soon... but first i have to find why the sub blew so i dont fry another one... i am pretty new to car audio and i'm kinda treating this as a learning experience... when we installed the system we check the settings on the hu and the amps were set correctly as well only running maybe 1000-1200 a subs in reality im thinking and the other sub is fine... just puzzled on finding where my problem was... i also noticed that one of the speaker wires in there the skin is a little burned too...
