Which wood to use?

Recommended Posts

I was told by a former "audio guy" that althought 3/4 MDF is used in car audio enclousers, 3/4 partical board could be used to reduce the weight of the encloser. How tru is this?

yes you can. you have to be very careful because it tends to fall apart on the edges. but it can work in a pinch.

Just use good stuff that's void-free. I used baltic birch plywood on my last box and it's awesome. So light.

x2 on the Birch. Particle board is not very tolerant to any sort of moisture. Me being in Fla, particle board will fall apart just with the moisture in the air. I'm making my enclosure with birch plywood and it is extremely light and easy to work with.

Knu does have cheap 1/0, but it's cheap for a reason. They have different qualities of 1/0.

x2

I never had good luck using partical board. It was flimsy around the edge and the glue doesnt hold up nearly as good as mdf or even better is baltic birch or Trupan light (not sure where to get it)
