q ported or sealed

Recommended Posts

anyone used there Q in a sealed box then switched to a low tuned ported 'round 29-30 hz or vice-vesa ported then sealed? if so how did it sound and the pros and cons. besides the ported being louder. was thinking of using a single 15 ported tuned low. but if sealed is more musical or sounds better ,can i make up the ouput loss by using 2 sealed

I had a Q18 in a 5.75 net sealed box for most of a year and was happy with it. Now I have another one in 7.0 ported tuned to 28hz. The woofer performs very well in both alignments imo, but i've always favored ported for my tastes. I dont think you can go wrong either way, but if you're limited to a single sub setup, I would push for ported. Still most of the time I would choose 1 ported over 2 sealed aswell, but ultimately depends on many other variables at hand.

i have a q 18 and have tried both i love the low the ported box has but with it tuned a 28 i feel the upper sub region lacks a little in my box probably due to it size if your going to build it to the larger box recommendations tune a little higher like 30hz if your gonna go small to medium 28hz should be fine.

Ok thanks, i have plenty of power to run the single and should be enough if i go with 2, I also have room to build a proper box. Guess i will try the ported tuned low. hey dbjunior you say you lost some of your upper range output, but i guess it picked up the low low stuff really well? You think i can make up the lost with strong midbass up front?

Ive had my Q15 between ported and sealed about 3 times I love them both. Im ported at 31hz right now its much louder but not quite as even of a response... I would also say the high end is a little lacking, so when Im in a very rock mood I throw it back in sealed. The Q is just amazing overall just get it in a fi recommended size box and it will sound good no joke.

depends on where your mids are crosses but it should help a lot. i have a crappy front stage so i try to cross the sub a little higher than i like. if your midbass is good down to 60 you will be fine. my box is very large and from 60-80hz it fades quite a bit 40's down it pounds so i cant complain. i run it on only 600w right now but have run as much as 1800 for short periods and never had mechanical issues even with the large box just have you ssf set right other wise you will have issues in a large box with a lot of power.

Haven't tried the Q's sealed but they still sound great in my ported box.
