SSD12 question (under-powered?)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new to this car audio thing, but I've been doing alot of research on what subwoofer I should get. I have a Alpine MRP-650 amp, and I was concidering buying the SSD12 sub. I have a ported box already built, to what I believe is the right size. I was just wondering if the sub will be under-powered. I would be buying the Dual 2-Ohm sub I believe.

Thanks for any help

welcome to ssa, you can't underpower a sub btw.

my ssd 12" is getting roughly 30 watts right now, off my pc's 7.1 system.

haha thanks man, I never even thought of running a subwoofer mainly used for cars for a computer.

How would the sub react to that amp though? and would i want the dual 1-ohm or 2?

You'll want to actually get a Dual 1 ohm sub as your amplifier is only stable to 2 ohms.

Wire it like this:

Not trying to thread jack or anything.

But can a D1 sub be wired to any other load than .5 or 2?

Like can it be wired to a 8ohm or 16 ohm load?

No only .5 or 2

Dang.

I have never really understood the whole ohm load thing, but I have never read up on ohm's law either.

I don't get how the amp knows what ohm load to produce and how the speaker is a certain ohm coil or whatever...

There is no law that says you have to send rms wattage to the driver. :)

As Denim pointed out, there's nothing wrong with having a low-powered amp. What kind of power do you think a 1000 watt amp is putting out when the volume knob is at 1? Maybe a watt. And the sub doesn't care. It will just play less loudly.

and as John said, you'll want the D1 driver so that you can wire the coils in series for a 2 ohm load on that amp.

The amp doesn't "know" anything. It just reacts to what the sub gives it. A speaker is a certain ohm because of the voice coil. Every wire has a resistence, and a voice coil is just wire. So depending on how much wire is used in making the voice coil and the properties of the metal used, you get different resistances (Resistance is the direct current term, impedance is for alternating current, such as your amp puts out). That's the start of it, anyway. The box changes the final impedance, too.

Hey everyone, here's the deal. I got the dual 1 ohm ssd12, hooked it up, wired it like the diagram a few posts above, and i turn it up, and it works, but only up until my radio hits about 25. It cuts out on me... I had my cheap mtx4500 in there and I could crank it to about 40, and it wouldn't cut out, it would just distort. Any ideas?

Edit: may have been wired wrong. be back with results
