Merry Christmas Team Sundown Members

Recommended Posts

Revised my winter rebuild plans for you guys. These are set in stone now and all my calculations for airspace and port area have been tested with the old drivers. This should give everyone an idea of what is going in. Car is getting a motor rebuild, transmission work, and suspension work done for the weight that is about to go in it right now (this should be most of Winter). I Can't guarantee a time I will release it. My hybrid 18" TC5200 Drivers will be here in a week!

can you compete with amps in the passenger seat? i thought it all had to be behind the door line.

yes that is exactly what the drivers will be.

the incredibly light moving mass is giving the drivers a sens. of almost 94db!

nearly half the moving mass of a standard tc5200 which has a sens. of 91.56db(18"). The most efficient drivers he has made to date. Cone consists of an acrylic foam with fiberglass skins and a basic paper dust cap with the older style surround (looks like the ones on my vintage JBL Century L100s that are around 45 years old). Heres the T/S parameters Thilo just printed up for me on them. Should give you guys some more insight.

No rule against this for bassrace, and no where near the realm of being unfair. Eliminating the passenger seat will actually hurt my score also, I am .3db louder with it in leaned all the way forward. Enclosure will still be at the window line and should land around 17.5-18 cubic feet after the displacement of everything. The backseat is is becoming the box so this is the final build....a lot of fiberglass and a a good amount of wood. I found that the standard 5200 drivers shined in a box as small as 2.8-3 cubic feet. Little airspace also kept impedance rise low. They were so efficient that after as many as 5 runs in the 149 class the location of the coil on the cone was still ice cold (it almost did not even make sense to me but they are just incredible woofers). Now that I am seeing 18 cubes avail. to me total and a common chamber is louder anyway 6 drivers should work out.

I don't see your windshields having a very long life span ;)

During the evolution of the awful windshield flex that car has had stepping frequency up has helped (35 and 43hz peak with the lms ultras and 46hz with the tc5200s). Hush matted the roof and doors. The side windows are frameless so I am a little more worried about them getting sucked in the car or blown off their tracks. Seems to be a frequent issue once you break that 156 mark on music (depending on frequency).

I always wondered when you would finally use Sundown amps, I know you did with the LMS-Ultra's, but it took a while ;) I remember that video of you demoing with Ashanti- Only You, that flex was awesome. You also opened my eyes to Grippin' The Grain. Good luck with your new build, can you say LOUD!

Thanks

The sundown products where actually around me for a little while even before I was using the memphis amps all the way back around the end of 06 but I never had a chance to do much testing with them. I purchased 8 4kws removed from a comp vehicle used for a couple shows for extremely cheap (less then 600 an amp if I remember correctly) so I just could not turn it down. Sold 6 out of the 8 and saved enough cash to keep two.

I am also seeking a daily option for the car with 4 drivers on (4 other 18's I can swap the 5200s out for, for 4.5 cubes a sub instead of 3) maybe even just 3 woofers for even more airspace per sub depending on the woofer -hint hint Jacob :)

Grippin the grain to this day has been the only song to smash all 3 windshields, must have been the way the last two notes in the song resonated in the car (analyzer said it was a 35 and a 33hz note that broke it). I stopped playing that song in the car.....:(
