Overheating 1ohm load?

Recommended Posts

My dad used to be really big into car audio and dbdrag's and stuff back in the day I'm talking about back in the early 90's when cerwin vega and JL was top of the line.and he is going to be helping me with my install.

I was telling him about my 15" SSD and running it at around 1000 watts @1ohm.

He said running your amp at a 1ohm load is bad for the amp because he said it will overheat allot quicker.

He also said I will be going through amps like tissues if I run them @1ohm

As long as I have my gains set right and I don't clip my amp won't overheat and crap out will it?

if your amp is 1ohm stable it will be fine

Amps are a lot different that they were years ago. More power, stable at lower impedance, more efficiency.

Ah that's what I was trying to explain to him but he is stubborn.

I was thinking of getting the Kenwood KAC1800 but I would have to wire my sub to a 2ohm load @ 900 watts RMS.

Would I get the dual 1 or 2 voice coil SSD?

I have no idea how to wire a sub to a 2ohm load.

Be careful of you statements. Have you ever heard of cheater amps.

Yes I should be more careful, but as a general statement that is true.

Good god I can't wait...

I was in the car with my friend and his fosgate T1 running at 500 rms and it was making the insides of my eardrums uncomfortable with the windows down!

I can't imagine running the SSD at 900 with the windows up..

That may be true but still, 1 ohm stable amps are a lot more common than they were back then. There were literally only a handful of them back then, and they were too expensive for most people. Now every company has 2-3.

True, but he made it seem that only new amps were the only ones that could do those things.

I in no way meant that. Sorry for the confusion.
