Help in general with a SSD 18"

Recommended Posts

I plan on ordering a SSD 18" pretty soon and I'm attempting to make my own box.

I'm only 16 and I'm not very good at math so if you guys could help me it would be greatly appreciated.

I used the box calculator over at ssa and this is what I got.

The 18" SSD needs 6-10cuft and needs to be tuned at 33hz, well I came up with some numbers and I got 19.5"H/ 36"W/ 18.5"D and after displacement that gives me 5.9cuft.

And then it gives me the port length, area, and volume.

(Port Length = 0.722 inches)

(Port Area = 7.069 inches squared)

(Port Volume = 0.003 ft cubed)

What do I do with those numbers?

I have no idea of how to tune a port or anything like that so I will need some help.

My next question is should I go with the dual 1 or 2 ohm voice coil?

I don't know the differences.

The last thing, I am going to power it with a Hifonics Txi 1008D Mono Amp which will give it 1000rms@1ohm.

Will I need to make any upgrades to my electrical or can I run this on stock electrical?

I really want this to work out and not have anything go wrong, sorry for asking so many questions.

Thanks in advance, Shane

I'm not the enclosure expert either, so I will let someone else handle that :) But as for subs, you need to get the D2 ohm SSD, so you can wire it to 1 ohm on your amp.

Ah okay 2ohm it is.

Yea the tuning and port dimensions is what I'm trying to figure out.

Thanks for the help Duran.

I just went out and measured the trunk and I won't be able to fit the 18 in height wise because I only have a 16" opening.

Well the sub is 9.5" vertical if I'm not mistaken?

So I will have to make it to where the sub if facing up and the port is firing towards the back right?

I need a little help.

Sounds like you would be better off getting a 15" Fi Q Dual 2 ohm. You will have better adjustability in designing a proper enclosure.....rather than just squeezing by to make the 18" work....

Yea I'm really considering that right now.

I'm sure the 15 would be a tight squeeze too if I faced the sub towards the back, I only have 16/17" vertical but I have like 40 inches wide and 28 inches deep to work with in the trunk.

Could I face the sub upwards and just make the box really wide and deep to make up for the lost height?

If this is going into a trunk then i would suggest having the port and the speaker both facing the rear of the vehicle....firing the sub or port up will only cause more rattling and will hurt your sound......Looking at it from the rear of your vehicle put the sub on the left(driver side) and the port on the right(passenger side).....

Ah ok, then it has to be a 15.

Since the cutout OD is 15.625" could I get away with making the height of the box 16" or is that bad for the structure of the box?

Yes it will work just fine.....less likely to flex since there is less wood there....but i always like to double the front face using two sheets of 3/4" MDF....never will flex, has more grip for the speakers screws.......but ill leave that up to you!!!!

Thanks for the help bro its greatly appreciated.

I just have one more problem I get all of my dimensions and everything looks good but I still don't understand cutout dimensions for L1 and L2 for the port.
