so my uncle recently died, which sucks really bad, but the kids (his brothers and sisters) are selling some of his stuff and the money goes to the grandkids in the family like it says in the will, and i am going to buy a new vegicle with it, but i can only find 1500's in my price range and they all have 350's in them, anyone know how to get better gas mileage out of those things because its really the only thing holding me back at the moment

Get an F150 :P

He wants better mileage, not to burn up the money in maintenance. :)

LOL, my GM has cost me about 10x in maintenance for 1/3 the miles.

Hmmm, we haven't had any GM vehicles that I can think of that we have had any real problems yet other than general maintenance.

finally hit 100 mph in the Camaro this afternoon

at 101, the little 6 just didn't have any more rpms even though I kept my foot in it for at least a mile

the suspension felt fine at that speed which was good to know for upcoming modifications

Really out of RPMs? wow. I had an '88 cavalier with the 2.8 V6, even a 3 speed, and got it to 115 when I wanted to slow down. So that surprises me.

4100rpm

it is a 250ci (4.1L) inline 6 sucking through a 1 barrel carb afterall

Eh, you are not going to get good mileage in any full size truck with a real engine.

*inserts GM joke

Yeah I've made plenty of them. The last time we left the mechanic shop with her SUV (3 weeks ago) the desk attendant said thanks for coming in, and I said "No problem, we'll see you next time, probably in a few weeks."

My stepdad put a rebuilt 454 in his old chevy and it gets about......4.5 mpg.

My dad's '97 F150 doesn't do too great though, unfortunately. Only like 14 mpg on the highway. He did have 305/70/16's on it, though. But it may be better since he did a tune up, I haven't talked to him about it. It has the smaller V8 engine in it. 4.6 liter I think.

was thinking of just putting a old mustang 302 in the ranger, but im not sure

Unless you want it for a play toy its probably not worth it.

A well maintained 1/2 ton with the 350 will get around 18mpg on the highway, depending on what it is (4x4, long bed, gearing, etc, etc) you could get 20mpg or so on the highway, but beyond that your pretty well screwed. You've got a 5,000-5,800lb truck that is a flying brick down the highway with a 350ci V8 in it...

In your dreams. Everyone I know with a non-LS Chev is lucky to get 15, and that is downhill with backwind.

I could get 15 with my 90 model with the hella inefficient TBI  No hills here...

Unless you've got 5k minimum to throw at a play toy of a Ranger I'd stay away from it for now.

I was wondering too, because my 4cylinder is at 105 before I shit into 5th but that is a much lighter car with better aeros and pushing 5500 RPM

The master bedroom at my parent's house now has double pane low e vinyl windows. Hella quieter than the original 1950's single pane aluminum ones. Put about 5 cans of foam and 4 tubes of caulk into em :lol2:

My feelings on the Ford/GM issue quoted from the Ford/GM topic....

I really have a complete dislike for V8 ford trucks... really just fords trucks in general. When I was looking for a truck I was stretching to find what I wanted in my price range for GM but I could find fords comparably equipped easily, which to me, says something. i really do think any vehicle with proper maintenance will last a long long time. I know my neighbor has an old ford from back when I was a kid that's still ticking and I know a lady with an F-150 that is older and still looks immaculate. I know we just donated our 90 model Chevy with an engine that was still very strong and my uncle got rid of a chevy with over 250K, and another friend of our had one with well over 250K and ran as good as the day he bought it. Its really give and take, but I have to say that IMO the Fords I have been in have felt like dogs. And really, I'd rather own something that performs better and may break a little more than something that is no where near thrilling but does run. I've noticed that most all Ford owners say "it gets the job done". "it gets the job done" = mediocrity. It gets it done but don't ask much else. That doesn't sell me vehicles.

Point in Case...

My Polaris Sportsman weighs more, and breaks a little more than my buddies Honda Rancher (Both the same year model). BUT when it comes to riding my ass stays planted to the seat while my true 4wd (no limited slip BS) gets me around things and my buddy is jumping off the bike because he has to man handle his bike out of the hole, but it does "get the job done". It really has to be a bit embarrassing when your riding with the ladies and you have to ask them to jump off to get out a hole that the buddy in front just cruised through with another chick on. So sure I have some more maintenance issues but its a hell of a trade for something that is more stable has much better midrange (where you really need it in an ATV) and gets me where I want and overall just performs better

A little off topic but I feel the same way in both situations

Feels like I'm old. My lower back and hips have been bothering me lately and every morning I wake up I hurt just getting out of bed.
